Beyonce's Stylist Talks Post-Baby Fashion
By a stroke of luck, I was seated next to one of Beyonce's stylists, Raquel Smith, at the Chado Ralph Rucci fashion show this week in New York. Of course, who wouldn't take this opportunity to pry into what one of pop's most fashionable will be wearing this year?
While we awaited the start of the show, Raquel shared with me her go-to brands for dressing the style icon, post-baby fashion, and what it's like to work for the Queen B.
TW: What sort of styles are you focusing on this year for Beyonce?
Raquel: We are focusing on more figured looks for her to show off her silhouette after she had the baby—we're just trying to show off her body.
TW: How was it trying to style her when she was pregnant, what were your tactics?
Raquel: At first it was very tricky because we were trying to keep it a secret, but we just found beautiful blouses and baggy slacks, loafers, some mid-heels, to not really show what was going on but keep her trendy and stylish.
TW: What are your go-to brands for her?
Raquel: For the shoes, Christian Louboutin, Manolo, Jimmy Choo, and Gucci. For jackets, Balmain and Barbara Bui.
TW: What was your favorite outfit you styled her in?
Raquel: Wow, that's hard!
TW: I loved her Orange Lanvin dress, so gorgeous!
Raquel: I was going to say, that was one of my favorites. Also the white long gown she performed in at the United Nations, the Marc Bauer one. It's so hard to pick just one, I could go on and on.
TW: What has been your favorite show at New York Fashion Week so far?
Raquel: Catherine Malandrino this morning, so gorgeous! I saw some pieces there Beyonce would love.
TW: What is the process for picking an outfit for a big show, or even day to day?
Raquel: If it's for a red carpet event, we just try to go for something that shows off her body, we try to show her waistline, show she's still sexy. I know a lot of people think after you have a baby you just lose your figure, but that's just not the case.
TW: It must be so nice to work with Beyonce, she seems incredibly down-to-earth.
Raquel: So nice, what you see is what you get! I really love my job!
