Beyoncé Performs at Michelle Obama's Birthday Party

Klaudia//January 19, 2014
As predicted, Beyoncé performed at Michelle Obama's 50th birthday party on Saturday, Jan. 18.

The singer, 32, posted a series of pictures from the intimate gathering via her Tumblr blog the next day. They show the "Partition" singer posing in a sequined gold mini-dress and nude heels, as well as petting one of the First Family's dogs. Beyoncé has a longstanding relationship with the Obama family. She serenaded the political power couple during the president's first inaugural ball in 2009, and she performed at his swearing-in ceremony in 2013. First Daughters Sasha and Malia are also big fans.

In addition to Beyoncé, John Legend also performed at the White House party. Famous attendees includied Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Samuel L. Jackson, Magic Johnson, Gayle King, Gladys Knight, Michael Kors, Rachael Ray, Smokey Robinson, Al Roker, Sheryl Sandberg and Stevie Wonder.

"I am looking forward to saying happy birthday to her, being able to celebrate this great milestone in her life," The Avengers' Jackson said on his way into the star-studded soiree.

President Barack Obama was mum about the party details in a previously published People interview, telling the magazine that "not even the NSA" knew what to expect. The United States' commander-in-chief was just as vague with other reporters, saying, "It's going to be a rolling birthday weekend."

Michelle is said to have worn a red and black ensemble, and her daughters invited friends to the bash.

The leaked invitation promised "Snacks & Sips & Dancing & Dessert" and asked guests to refrain from taking photos inside the event. Attendees were also encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, as the entire state floor—including the gilded east room, the formal parlors and the state dining room—was transformed into a dance floor. At one point, POTUS, 52, taught guests how to do "The Dougie!"

For some, however, the president's remarks about his wife of 21 years were the highlight of the night. "It was really beautiful and really touching," musician Herbie Hancock said. "He said something—his voice almost cracked like he was crying. It was just beautiful, a husband speaking about his wife."

The Obamas' family and friends departed the gathering about 2 a.m.
