Minnesota Governor Announces Statewide 'Beyoncé and Jay-Z Day'

August 15, 2018

Minnesota Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton declared August 8th as a statewide “Beyoncé and Jay-Z Day” in anticipation of the megastar couple’s concert in Minneapolis. “Beyoncé and Jay-Z have taken home numerous awards from platforms such as the Grammy Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, BET Awards, American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and NAACP Image Awards, among others and have sold millions of records worldwide,” Dayton wrote in an official proclamation.

“Through their lives and music, Beyoncé and Jay-Z have inspired Minnesotans, and music fans around the world,” he continued.

The proclamation was signed shortly before the couple gave a joint concert at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

Dayton’s announcement comes over two years after he declared May 23rd as statewide ‘Beyoncé Day’ before the 36-year-old singer gave a concert in Minneapolis in 2016. Neither one of the pair were born or raised in Minnesota, with Beyoncé from Texas while Jay-Z is from New York.

Throwback: Backstage with Destiny's Child in the Summer of 2001

August 15, 2018

Photographer Gillian Laub revisits some outtakes from an emotional day with Beyoncé, Michelle, Kelly, and the Knowles family.

In the summer of 2001, I was commissioned by The New York Times Magazine to photograph Destiny’s Child for a special women’s issue. The theme was women photographing women. It was one of my earliest commissions, and I was over the moon when I got the call. I spent the day backstage as they prepared for that evening’s concert in Albany, New York. I loved what a family affair this was. Beyoncé Knowles was surrounded by her parents, sister, and her cousins. It felt like Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams, and Beyoncé were sisters, too. Before the trio went onstage, they said a prayer that felt so earnest and pure, it almost felt intrusive to photograph. But now, I’m so glad I did.

Beyoncé Meets With Hurricane Harvey Victims in Houston

Beyoncé returned home to Houston on Friday and joined the survivors of Hurricane Harvey at her home church, St. John’s United Methodist Church, with Senior Pastor, Rudy Rasmus - affectionately known to the global community as Pastor Rudy.

Joining Pastor Rudy and Beyoncé were her mother Tina Knowles Lawson, daughter Blue Ivy and bandmate Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, among others who were on hand to provide support and aid to the victims of Hurricane Harvey, which has profoundly impacted the region.

The Houston native thanked everyone who donated on her Instagram: "Thanks to everyone who donated to BeyGOOD and contributed to helping so many families in Houston. Thank you Pastor Rudy, Michelle, Ingrid and all at St. John's Church. Thank you to Trae Tha Truth and your crew. Y'all are so consistently dedicated to our community. Thank you!! There is still work to do so please continue to donate and do all you can to restore our city."

Although Pastor Rudy would not disclose the financial donation that Beyoncé made on behalf of Hurricane Harvey, he did say that it was sizable. “Over the years, I’ve worked with Beyoncé to help coordinate various humanity opportunities to impact places in the states and all over the world,” says Pastor Rudy. “She has partnered with Bread of Life to do food drives. We have addressed food insufficiency around the world, including countries in Africa and India, where people are really suffering. We’ve done great work with her.”

His relationship with the superstar goes back many years. “I’ve known Beyoncé since she was a little girl,” Pastor Rudy continued. “She grew up at St. John’s. I’ve known her mom and dad before they had kids. Beyoncé has been an amazing friend and generous supporter. She has helped us do some significant work in the Houston area and she is totally committed to the recovery efforts on behalf of Hurricane Harvey.”

He noted that Houston has long benefited from many contributions made by Beyoncé and the extended Knowles family, including the Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth, which started in 2002 through St. John’s Church. “I often say that the Knowles-Rowland Center was built on Destiny’s Child hit single, ‘No, No, No.’ Destiny’s Child came through and help to build up a gymnasium as an outreach center for young people in our community,” says the pastor.

With tens of thousands of people displaced and adversely affected by days of torrential rain and flooding in Houston and the surrounding areas, Pastor Rudy and the Bread of Life team have already begun outreach and recovery efforts. Hurricane Harvey is now considered one of the most devastating natural disasters in American history; with the damage spanning Texas and Louisiana, damages to date are estimated to cost more than $100 billion in clean-up and repair.
