Throwback: Backstage with Destiny's Child in the Summer of 2001

August 15, 2018

Photographer Gillian Laub revisits some outtakes from an emotional day with Beyoncé, Michelle, Kelly, and the Knowles family.

In the summer of 2001, I was commissioned by The New York Times Magazine to photograph Destiny’s Child for a special women’s issue. The theme was women photographing women. It was one of my earliest commissions, and I was over the moon when I got the call. I spent the day backstage as they prepared for that evening’s concert in Albany, New York. I loved what a family affair this was. Beyoncé Knowles was surrounded by her parents, sister, and her cousins. It felt like Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams, and Beyoncé were sisters, too. Before the trio went onstage, they said a prayer that felt so earnest and pure, it almost felt intrusive to photograph. But now, I’m so glad I did.

On The Run II Tour European Leg Grosses $87.6M

July 31, 2018

With the combined star power of Beyoncé and Jay-Z, it comes as no surprise that the first leg of the couple’s “OTR II Tour” was a wild success. Pollstar’s Boxoffice has received reports for the entire 18-night European excursion – and every single show sold out.

Presented by Live Nation Global Touring in association with Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, the stadium outing kicked off June 6 at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. That gig sold 39,731 tickets and grossed nearly $4.2 million (£3.1 million).

The European run racked up a total of 871,012 tickets sold and grossed more than $87.6 million. The average show sold 58,067 tickets and grossed more than $5.8 million, with tickets ranging in price from as low as €10 ($11.69) in Rome and Milan, Italy, to as high as €175 ($204.44) in Barcelona. The average ticket price was $100.57, which would seem a bargain to catch two of the biggest artists around.

The biggest stop of the European leg was the two-night stand at London Stadium, which sold a total of 126,443 tickets and grossed nearly $11.2 million. The London show also happened to be the location for the couple announcing the surprise release of their collaborative Everything Is Love album. The other cities that were treated to two nights of The Carters were Paris and Amsterdam.

She’s known as Queen Bey for a reason! Beyoncé and Jay-Z kicked off their On the Run II tour in Cardiff, Wales, on Wednesday, June 6, and while the show is epic for so many reasons (think: insane musical talent, jamming songs, gorgeous costumes), we couldn’t help but be mesmerized by Beyoncé’s #flawless cascade of curls. So you can imagine our delight from Bey’s longtime hair colorist Rita Hazan (the same woman who crafted the perfect shade of blonde for those history-making 2018 Coachella performances in April) agreed to spill all the details on the summery strands.

“I got a call that Beyoncé wanted her hair color to be super dramatic for this show which is why I jumped on the soonest flight to Paris to meet with her last weekend,” Rita tells Us. When it came to deciding on the perfect shade, the colorist, who first started working with Bey about seven years ago at the recommendation of the diva’s hairstylist Kim Kimble, explained that it was all about minding the details (i.e. lighting, wardrobe, makeup, etc.).

“She was requesting color that was impactful and that would translate well on stage with the bright lights and her fierce wardrobe,” Hazan says. “I ended up making the ends of her hair extremely golden blonde – not ashy – and her roots a few shades darker. It took a few hours to create but overall she is embracing a more natural look and texture.”

While the half-up style and tight ringlets are similar to the waist-grazing urban glam look she sported at Coachella, the On The Run II hue is noticeably warmer than the music festival’s ashier blonde. The new shade is the perfect complement to her sculpted golden goddess makeup look, complete with a neutral lip, shimmering eye and graphic winged liner. Read more...
Beyoncé and Jay-Z have teamed up with two of the world's most prestigious youth-focused initiatives, The Prince's Trust and Global Citizen, to reward fans for being kind, charitable and doing good for others. Fans who volunteer through these organizations will be given the opportunity to win a pair of tickets to the United Kingdom and European dates on the OTR all stadium tour.

The BeyGOOD/DoGood campaign kicks off in the UK on June 6 in Cardiff, Wales, with The Prince's Trust, the youth charity founded by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1976, to help change young lives. Beyoncé also partnered with The Prince's Trust in 2014 during her solo Mrs. Carter Show World Tour.

Global Citizen continues the campaign in Europe starting on June 19 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. First launched in 2012, Global Citizen is an international advocacy organization working to end extreme poverty by 2030. In addition to performing twice at the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park, in New York City, Beyoncé has joined forces with Global Citizen through Gucci's CHIME FOR CHANGE with a focus on social issues faced by women and girls globally.

"The united efforts of BeyGOOD/DoGood, along with our amazing partners The Prince's Trust and Global Citizen, are calling upon you to lift your voices, lend your hands and share your creativity as active and positive forces for doing good," states Ivy McGregor, Director of Philanthropy (BeyGOOD) and Corporate Relations for Parkwood Entertainment. "Wherever you are and whatever skills, talents and resources you possess, are of value to others in your community, country and across the globe." Read more...
Next month, Beyoncé and JAY-Z will kick off their On The Run II tour in Europe before touching down in the U.S. in July. While no guest openers have been announced for the European leg of the tour, Bey's mentees, Chloe x Halle, and DJ Khaled announced Thursday (May 31) on Twitter that they'll be joining the power couple for the North American jaunt.

"We will be opening for the North American leg of On the Run II. That's right, the kids are on the run, too," said Chloe, who could barely contain her excitement, in a short video posted to the duo's Twitter. Halle added, "We are so very excited for this family reunion of Parkwood and Roc Nation. We cannot wait to join the North American leg of this tour; we cannot wait to see your beautiful faces and we're so thankful to Beyoncé and to JAY-Z and we just know that this is going to be an epic reunion."

DJ Khaled followed suit and shared the On the Run II promo flyer on Twitter, writing, "Hitting the road with @S_C_ and @Beyonce in North America for the #OTR2 tour!!"

The North American leg of the upcoming tour will begin July 25 in Cleveland, Ohio. From there, Bey, Hov and their guests will make stops in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Buffalo, Miami, Atlanta and more before ending the tour in Vancouver on October 2.
Destiny’s Child just had an epic reunion at Coachella last month — but according to Kelly Rowland, that doesn’t mean they’ll be joining Beyoncé and JAY-Z on tour this summer.

After rumors spread that Rowland and Michelle Williams would be joining the superstar couple for their upcoming On The Run II tour, Rowland, 37, tells PEOPLE that they aren’t true. In fact, there hasn’t even been any talk about the possibility.

“This is the first time I heard it — this morning,” Rowland told PEOPLE at Schick’s F.A.B. event in N.Y.C. on Thursday. “I was like, ‘Well, that’s news to me!’ There hasn’t been anything we discussed. She and Jay are getting ready to go on tour — I’m sad because I won’t see those babies.”

But according to the singer, the girl group is just as in sync as they were during their Destiny’s Child days. Rowland adds that while they spent days in rehearsals for their most recent reunion at Coachella, hitting the stage with Beyoncé and Williams by her side felt just like old times.

“It was long days but it was so fun. I think the best part was it felt like we were just on stage yesterday. It didn’t feel like it was years that we haven’t been together, and that’s how natural we are together as friends, as sisters.” Read more...
Beyoncé and JAY-Z are ready to put their love on top during their upcoming tour, On The Run 2.

The Lemonade singer’s stepfather, Richard Lawson, popped by the PEOPLE Now studio to talk about his new 10-episode legal drama series In Contempt alongside co-stars Erica Ash and Christian Keyes, when he revealed the couple’s plans to display a more vulnerable side on stage after working hard to strengthen their marriage following publicized issues of past infidelity.

“Well, look at what they’ve been through in the last couple of years in terms of the things that they’ve confronted and the way that they’ve put it into art,” Lawson tells PEOPLE. “This is gonna be really a culmination of their growth and their ability to really confront the hard subjects and the hard issues.”

After therapy and hard work, the rap mogul, 48, revealed to David Letterman on Friday’s episode of his Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman that he and the Queen Bee, 36, are “in a better place today,” possibly because of her big heart and openness to forgive. JAY-Z and Beyonce are indeed touring this summer, two sources tell Billboard, despite the swift, mysterious removal of an announcement on Ticketmaster and Facebook (March 5) for their On The Run 2 tour.

A hold for the tour had been placed at a number of North American stadiums, one of the sources said.

Speculation about a Bey + Jay tour had been rampant since Feb. 22 when a fan spotted U.K. and North American landing pages for a 2018 stadium tour on Ticketmaster, which were also quickly erased after being publicized. The famous couple last toured together in 2014 for the On The Run tour and their 2018 outing is being billed as a sequel to that 19-show jaunt. Tuesday’s revelation comes via screen grab of Beyonce’s Facebook page, showing a July 30 concert in Philadelphia at Lincoln Financial Field. Once discovered, both the Ticketmaster and Facebook information was deleted.

Billboard has reached out to Live Nation but the concert promoter did not comment. Last year JAY-Z renewed his contract with Live Nation, which is likely promoting the On The Run 2 tour.

One of the delays behind the On The Run 2 tour announcement could be Beyonce's upcoming appearance at Coachella, April 14 and 21. In the past, Coachella organizer Goldenvoice has required headliner artists to hold off until after the festival to announce new tour dates.

Waiting until April 22 (the Monday after Coachella) would give her 98 days to announce, sell tickets and market the Philadelphia show, which would be shorter than the window needed for most stadium tours, but would probably be enough time since there is likely to be strong demand for the co-headlining show. There's also the possibility the leak was a planned marketing stunt to generate buzz for the event and remind fans to set aside a few dollars, especially with a busy 2018 summer taking shape with stadium jaunts for Dead and Company, Pearl Jam, Ed Sheeran and Def Leppard with Journey.
Looks like Beyonce is about to announce a tour with Jay-Z! The singer's Facebook page was updated with a new event - Beyoncé & Jay-z - On The Run 2. The concert is set to take place on July 30 at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Tickets will be available on Ticketmaster.
