Tina Knowles Took Beyoncé and Solange to Counseling as Children

May 15, 2018

Beyoncé and Solange Knowles went to counseling as young girls in order to help them deal with the popstar’s rising fame.

The singers’ mother, Tina Knowles Lawson, opened up to Maria Shriver during a Facebook discussion for the former TV reporter’s Architects of Change segment on social media Friday.

Knowles Lawson, 64, revealed her own childhood upbringing — where she felt her mother loved her brother more — affected how she raised her daughters.

“I had days that I devoted to . On Wednesdays, I took off from work and that was Solange’s day. She was a lot younger than Beyoncé and it was tough because was five years older and Beyoncé was this little superstar in our city,” Knowles Lawson said.

Despite dedicating certain days of the week to each daughter, the designer said she took extra steps in ensuring that her children had a close and supportive relationship instead of a competitive one.

“I took them to counseling so that, very early, the counselor could help Beyoncé be more sensitive to Solange,” Knowles Lawson explained. “She couldn’t stand her for a minute. You know, they were little, was all in her stuff, trying to hang around her and her friends and Beyoncé was really irritated but it made her more sensitive to who her sister was and what she had to deal with because of her.”

Beyoncé's Wings Of Desire Unveiled At The V&A

May 11, 2018

"I do love butterflies", Grammy award-winning superstar Beyoncé tells me, "but the Papillon was something special". Today her dazzling Papillon will be unveiled as a permanent exhibit at the V&A Museum, donated it as a gift from her private collection, to the William & Judith Bollinger Gallery. The ring’s glittery green mosaic-style wings, created by London jeweller Glenn Spiro using 326 tsavorites, and not surprisingly, 342 brilliant-cut diamonds, "Yes, diamond’s are always a girl’s best friend," says Beyoncé, who spends time looking for distinctive jewels because, "they remind me of a special moment".

"She and Jay-Z buy beautiful things", explains Spiro, "Not just jewellery but also art; they are collectors." The three friends were hanging out together in Los Angeles, in a suite at the Peninsular Hotel, when the subject of the V&A seeking exciting examples of contemporary jewellery cropped up. "She immediately said she’d like to donate the jewel," he says.

When he was originally imagining the design in his West End atelier (once the showroom of couturier Norman Hartnell) he fashioned the stones flat. It wasn’t until he developed a titanium spring, wrapped like a diamond-set antennae over the knuckle, that the butterfly’s wings took flight and were able to flutter in time with Beyoncé’s finger.

"This titanium setting couldn’t have been done until recently and it’s so incredibly delicate," says Richard Edgcumbe, Senior Curator of the V&A Museum, as he turns the butterfly over in his gloved hands. "Of course it's close in spirit to the quivering en tremblant jewels of the 19th-Century which also needed human agency to make the diamonds quiver and come to life. Beyoncé is a role model in so many ways that having her personal jewel will be transforming to the gallery," Edgcumbe adjusts his tie, "to be honest we’re all quite star struck at the thought of it".

Kelly Rowland Responds to Rumors Destiny's Child Is Joining OTR Tour

May 5, 2018

Destiny’s Child just had an epic reunion at Coachella last month — but according to Kelly Rowland, that doesn’t mean they’ll be joining Beyoncé and JAY-Z on tour this summer.

After rumors spread that Rowland and Michelle Williams would be joining the superstar couple for their upcoming On The Run II tour, Rowland, 37, tells PEOPLE that they aren’t true. In fact, there hasn’t even been any talk about the possibility.

“This is the first time I heard it — this morning,” Rowland told PEOPLE at Schick’s F.A.B. event in N.Y.C. on Thursday. “I was like, ‘Well, that’s news to me!’ There hasn’t been anything we discussed. She and Jay are getting ready to go on tour — I’m sad because I won’t see those babies.”

But according to the singer, the girl group is just as in sync as they were during their Destiny’s Child days. Rowland adds that while they spent days in rehearsals for their most recent reunion at Coachella, hitting the stage with Beyoncé and Williams by her side felt just like old times.

“It was long days but it was so fun. I think the best part was it felt like we were just on stage yesterday. It didn’t feel like it was years that we haven’t been together, and that’s how natural we are together as friends, as sisters.”

Beyoncé Launches New Vegan Meal-Planning App

May 4, 2018

Beyoncé delivered the performances of a lifetime from Coachella with good reason. She is in great shape, and that all started in the kitchen. She attributes her healthy eating lifestyle of going vegan and wants to share her tips with you. The pop star recently launched a vegan meal-delivery service 22 Days Nutrition which is owned by her and vegan nutritionist Marco Borges.

22 Days of Nutrition uses a matching system to connect users to plant-based meals curated by nutritionists. It allows you to customize your meals based on cooking habits, dietary needs, allergies, household size, and goals. At that point, the meals are personalized for you. The app consists of thousands of recipes ranging from breakfast to dinner and boasts that they are easy and simple to make.

After you’ve chosen what you like, you can either take your grocery list to the store or order in app. The platform has partnered with Instacart and Peapod to allow users to order their groceries online and have them shipped directly to their doorstep.

“We believe that optimum health shouldn’t be something that is reserved for a select few but is a right for all. Everyone deserves the opportunity to live their best, happiest life,” states the site.

Beyoncé's Choreographers Talk Coachella

May 3, 2018

Since November, Chris Grant and JaQuel Knight have been up to their elbows in marching bands, musicians and dancers — dozens of men and women from an array of traditions.

Beyoncé may have been front and center at her spectacular Coachella performances last month. But two of her secret weapons were Mr. Grant and Mr. Knight, the show’s main choreographers.

From the start Beyoncé was clear about what she wanted. “She said, ‘Let’s do a homecoming,’” Mr. Knight said. “Boom. A nice, clear concept that we were all able to snap into and execute.”

In the nearly two-hour performance, references to homecoming at historically black colleges and universities (H.B.C.U.s) — complete with a marching band and a glittering majorette solo — lived alongside dance styles ranging from flexing, a form born on the streets of Brooklyn, to stepping, a percussive form popular in fraternities and sororities.

Beginning in December, Mr. Grant and Mr. Knight worked with Beyoncé’s music team and started their preliminary dance preparations. By January, they started skeleton-crew rehearsals. “We worked with 12 dancers for a month just to start to further develop the ideas that we laid down in December,” Mr. Knight said. “We started to build choreography.”

Michelle Williams Talks Beyonce's Coachella Performance

April 29, 2018

Michelle Williams knows how to keep a secret. “We’re the secret queens,” the singer tells Billboard in the wake of performing two consecutive weekends at Coachella with headliner Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland. The trio, who rose to commercial acclaim in the late ‘90s and early aughts as Destiny’s Child, had been keeping the surprise under wraps since February, when Bey reached out to her former band members and asked them to join her for a medley of their mega-hits including “Say My Name,” “Lose My Breath” and “Soldier.”

“It’s just like old girlfriends coming together,” explains the 37-year-old, who last reunited as Destiny’s Child at the 2015 Stellar Awards where they performed her upbeat gospel single “Say Yes.” “It’s something that when the three of us come together, we all know we feel safe within each other. Like I got your back. We’re good. I really love that about us.”

Since Destiny’s Child went on hiatus in the wake of their last album, 2004’s Destiny Fulfilled, Williams hasn’t slowed. She’s put out four solo full-lengths including her final release, 2014’s Journey to Freedom (which won’t be her last); starred on stage as leads in Chicago and Aida; launched her own furniture and candle line Believe by Michelle; and, more recently, got engaged to pastor Chad Johnson just prior to her Coachella performance. Still teeming with excitement from the pair of shows, Williams explains how it all came together.

There were rumors before Coachella that a Destiny’s Child reunion might happen. How did the conversations begin for this? Did Beyoncé call you and just say, “It’s time?”

Beyonce Albums Re-Enter Billboard 200 Chart After Coachella

April 24, 2018

Beyoncé’s debut at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 14 powered big gains for her music sales and streams in the U.S. in the week ending April 19, according to Nielsen Music.

The diva headlined the second night of the festival, which was streamed live on YouTube. Her well-received performance featured her husband JAY-Z, her sister Solange and a Destiny’s Child reunion alongside group members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams .

Combined, the album and song catalog of both Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child saw an 83 percent increase in sales in the week ending April 19, as the two acts combined sold 8,000 albums (up 102 percent from 4,000 a week earlier) and 37,000 digital tracks (up 79 percent from 21,000).

The biggest-selling album between the two acts was Beyoncé’s 2016 set Lemonade, which re-enters the April 28-dated Top Album Sales chart at No. 24 with 5,000 sold (up 142 percent) -- its best sales frame since the week ending Dec. 28, 2017.

Beyoncé Friday amplified her Halloween tribute to Lil' Kim, showing off five costumes she wore to honor the hip-hop legend.

And, Lil' Kim loved it.

Queen Bey, whose Halloween Lil' Kim was accompanied by husband Jay-Z as The Notorious B.I.G., revealed the full range of her outfits on her website and in Instagram postings. The music superstar's appreciation states: "Hip Hop would not be the same without our original Queen B."

Beyoncé's outfits match those worn by the renowned rapper, songwriter and producer in earlier performances and appearances, including some from the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Lil' Kim was floored by the tribute, tweeting: "I'm speechless and honored."

Beyoncé — as close as any modern artist to royalty status in American pop music — will play the queen to be of the Pride Lands in Disney’s coming live-action remake of “The Lion King.”

The studio confirmed Tuesday that she will voice the role of Nala, opposite Donald Glover’s Simba, in the classic coming-of-age tale set among the animal kingdom of the African savanna.

The star-studded cast will also include James Earl Jones — reprising his role as Mufasa from the 1994 animated version — Chiwetel Ejiofor in the part of Scar, and a new spin on a vintage odd couple: Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen as Timon and Pumbaa.

The new “King” will make a play for a box office coronation in July 2019. It will join a string of live-action adaptations (with a healthy dose of state-of-the-art visual effects) that have been reliable hits for Disney in recent years, following “Beauty and the Beast” this year, “The Jungle Book” in 2016 and “Cinderella” in 2015. Jon Favreau, who helmed the recent “Jungle Book,” will direct. Read more...

The road to Cardi B's debut album has been smeared with setbacks, as well as huge feats for the rising star, and she might have another accomplishment to add to her already growing resume: a Beyonce feature. According to a snapshot of Michael Ashby's -- Cardi's engineer -- Instagram story, the two artists may have a collaboration in the works.

Ashby, the engineer behind Cardi's hit "Bodak Yellow," shared a photo of a mix titled "Cardi B & Beyonce" and wrote 'Wow this feature is big" over the image. Ashby didn't reveal whether the track is a loosie, or might possibly land on the Bronx rapper's forthcoming album.

Cardi and Beyonce previously met at Made in America festival earlier in September. After meeting Beyonce, Cardi said that she was surprised the "Formation" singer liked her music, and was speechless when they officially met. Miss Tina Lawson, Beyonce's mother, also greeted Cardi backstage at the festival. Billboard reached out to Atlantic Records and Beyonce's reps for comment.

Naughty Boy’s “Runnin’ (Lose It All),” featuring Beyoncé and Arrow Benjamin, tops Billboard & Clio’s Top TV Commercials chart, powered by Shazam, for September, thanks to the song’s appearance in Chanel’s “Film” ad.

Using tagging data from Shazam, as well as sales and streaming information tracked by Nielsen Music, Billboard partners with Clio Music each month to present a chart ranking the top songs in commercials. Rankings exclude any song that has recently charted within the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 or top 10 on a genre chart.

“Runnin’,” which debuted and peaked at No. 90 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 2015, leads all songs with 70,000 Shazam tags, 6,000 downloads sold and 2 million U.S. streams during the month of September, according to Nielsen Music.

The song is the first No. 1 on the chart for Naughty Boy, Beyonce, and Arrow Benjamin. Beyonce’s previous peak on the chart was at No. 2 on the April 2017-dated list, with “Freedom,” featuring Kendrick Lamar, which appeared in Apple Watch’s “Live Bright” commercial. Read more...

Prince may have been known for his brilliance in more ways than one, but Beyoncé is highlighting a lesser-known talent of the late legendary artist -- his comedic timing.

The Lemonade singer penned the foreword of Prince: A Private View -- a photo retrospective of the pop icon's life, featuring the photography of Afshin Shahidi (father of Black-ish star Yara Shahidi) -- on shelves Oct. 24. In one excerpt, Queen Bey admits she almost lost it while performing with the "Purple Rain" rocker at the 2004 GRAMMYs, because of how he ended the performance.

“Prince’s timing was genius and his sense of humor, spontaneous and unexpected," Beyonce, 34, writes. "At the end of 'Purple Rain'/'Let’s Go Crazy'/'Crazy in Love' medley, I had no idea he would say what he did. We did talk about making a face but when he blurted out 'Don’t hate us ‘cause we fab,' it took everything I had to keep my composure."

Remembering the performance, we can see why it'd be hard not to!

Backing up, Beyoncé begins the excerpt by telling the story of how the two prepared for their spectacular GRAMMYs appearance. Read more...
