On the Run II Tour Finishes with More Than $250 Million

October 24, 2018

They say it’s a marathon, not a sprint. But for Beyoncé and JAY-Z, it was both. Their sprawling On the Run II Tour finished with $253.5 million in the bank, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore.

The trek wrapped Oct. 4 at Seattle’s CenturyLink Field, the last of the 48 stadium dates they played, after beginning June 6 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. From there, the dynamic duo played 18 shows throughout Europe, peaking at London Stadium’s two-night engagement with $11 million grossed and more than 125,000 tickets sold. After a few final shows in France, including their debut performance of “APESHIT” in Paris, they crossed the pond for 30 North American shows, with doubles in Landover, Md.; East Rutherford, N.J.; Chicago; Atlanta; Houston; and Pasadena, Calif. The biggest earner of the tour was the Aug. 25-26 engagement at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, grossing $14.1 million.

On the Run II is the sequel to 2014’s On the Run Tour, a massive success in its own right. Billboard named it the Top R&B/Hip-Hop tour of the year, coming in at No. 8 on 2014's overall Top Tours list, with three appearances on the year-end Top Boxscores ranking. The original trek grossed $109.6 million from 980,000 tickets sold.

But despite the high bar set four years ago, On the Run II expanded The Carters’ worldwide reach. The $253.5 million haul of this year’s run represents a 132 percent increase over the original’s gross. While one might worry that expanding from 21 sold-out stadium dates to 48 would be spreading oneself thin, Beyoncé and JAY-Z were still able to increase their average per-show gross, maintaining a pace of $5.28 million each night.

As the world gears up for Jay Z and Beyoncé’s HBO special this Saturday, featuring footage from their ‘On The Run’ tour, fans are wondering about the mysterious disappearance of part one of the three-part video series ‘Bang Bang’ from the Internet this week. Clips from the highly anticipated film were shown throughout the tour, and it is expected to feature in tomorrow’s documentary special in some capacity. i-D ventured to the Soho studio of the film’s director Dikayl Rimmasch and his accomplice, Will Kaner, to get the scoop.

Tell us about the three parts of "Bang Bang.”
Dikayl Rimmasch: The director's cut, the linear three-part concept, the first of which was on the Internet briefly, was based on the storyboards we had originally laid out. The tour cuts were much faster-paced versions based on the venue and energy. Beyond that, I don’t know about the release and timing of the different parts.

What happened to Part 1?

How did you come up with the treatment?
DR: Jay Z and Beyoncé wanted to do something different. Beyoncé had this idea to start the concert with a different vibe based on Breathless. I had been shooting in a hand-held style for Ralph Lauren that was similar, so that was the connection. I had just met the war photographer/branding guy Will Kaner and we painstakingly went through all of these films like Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, Breathless and True Romance, practically frame by frame trying to find images that Jay and B's team would respond to and do the job. I think it was a bit of a risk because Jay and B hadn't done anything in that style before. They really wanted to know that we'd done our homework. Read more...
Beyonce posted a short thank you video for her fans.

"On The Run for 21 shows in 17 cities. Thank you <3"

Last week she remembered the victims of 9/11:

"We will never forget the lives of those lost on September 11, 2001.

They are in our hearts today and always.

Beyonce.com was updated with sketches and short descriptions of the four new tour outfits.

Versace designed the look, a bodysuit made from transparent tulle with black vinyl boning, with the term “Bandit Beyoné” in mind for the opening of the Paris leg of the On The Run Tour. Versace described the outfit as “Strong and powerful; perfect for an incredible opening in Paris!”

For the first of the two final On The Run shows in Paris, Beyoncé called on Givenchy to add a new look to the tour wardrobe. The look, a black bodysuit with mesh, leather and studded additives was inspired by a fusion of ’70s bondage, mermaid and pinups.

Two American outlaws speed through the Californian desert in a dusty 1960s Pontiac GTO with a manifest poise and stylish swagger that could only be embodied by the world’s foremost musical couple: Beyoncé and Jay Z. Directed by the New York-based filmmaker and photographer Dikayl Rimmasch, Bang Bang is a trilogy of short films starring Mr and Mrs Carter that appeared throughout their two-and-a-half month long tour, On the Run, which celebrated its finale on Saturday at Stade de France in Paris. Rimmasch was introduced to Beyoncé and Jay Z via Mark Romanek, and with a creative cohort in the war photojournalist William Kaner put together a filmmaking approach and aesthetic inspired by French new wave cinema and the powerful intimacy of legendary independent director and mentor, Les Blank. Rimmasch’s stripped-back process paid dividends, allowing an incredibly fast, shoot-from-the-hip style using custom camera rigs that he had designed, 50-year-old Russian lenses and lighting effects by Archie Ciotti and Scott Spencer. Below, we’re in conversation with the steadfast director—also known for his black-and-white campaigns for RRL by Ralph Lauren—about Bang Bang’s conception and what it’s like to direct contemporary music’s most iconic performers.
