"Lemonade" nominated at the Art Directors Guild Awards

Klaudia//January 6, 2017
Beyoncé has been named four times during the February's Art Directors Guild award nominations as a result of her 2016 video album Lemonade.

Beyoncé's visual album Lemonade, which comprised a one-hour film and a 12 track recording, has been nominated once for Excellence in Production Design for an Award or Special Event, and three times for individual song treatments in the ADG's Short Format category — 6 inch, Denial, and Hold Up.

Appearing alongside it as nominees in the Awards or Special Event are televised musical productions Grease Live! and Hairspray Live! as well the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards and the 88th Academy Awards show.

Adidas commercial “Basketball Needs Creators” and iPhone 7 spot “Balloons” are the two other reels whose production designers were nominated in Short Format.

The 21st Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards will be held Feb. 11 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood and Highland.

Chayse Irvin Comments on Iconic "Lemonade" Shot

Klaudia//December 29, 2016
The top 10 shots of the year according to Variety:

#4

“LEMONADE”
Director of Photography: Chayse Irvin, CSC

“There was a compositional arc throughout the whole collaboration with Khalil , a desire to conceal a lot of information in the frame, or at least the most important information. This shot is a great example of that, because we’re concealing her face with that coat she’s wearing. It was this kind of beast or this mythical creature starting to transform. And what Khalil did with the sound was captivating and interesting. His form of editing is beautiful. He’s constantly stitching together the most contrasting of images to give some sort of metaphor or meaning that resonates on a subjective level.”

—Chayse Irvin

“Lemonade” — Beyonce’s Knowles-Carter’s visual album that hit like a lightning bolt in the spring — has popped up on a few assessments of the year’s best films. Whatever parameters you might have for what makes something a proper movie, the project was absolutely a work of cinema, the compendium of an artist working through many levels of expression. Its identifying image stood out in particular, leading off the proceedings and serving as the album’s key art. There’s an eerily metamorphic quality to it, like something stirring from a slumber to unleash a pent-up energy.

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk Features a Fake Beyoncé

Klaudia//November 14, 2016

Perhaps you already know the premise of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, an Iraq War movie based on the novel of the same name, which dramatizes the titular veteran’s experience with PTSD during a Cowboys game. Perhaps you’ve read about the controversy over Ang Lee’s decision to shoot the film with a remarkably high 120 fps frame rate, which has the effect of making all the actors look like plastic dolls. This is not a post about either of those things. This is a post about how Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk features a fake Beyoncé — and also a fake Kelly and Michelle. But more importantly: Fake. Beyoncé.

Fake Beyoncé plays a small, but crucial role within Billy Lynn’s narrative: Destiny’s Child is headlining the halftime show where Billy (Joe Alwyn) and the rest of his squadron are being honored. In the film’s central set piece, the soldiers march with the trio to the stage, and then assemble behind them for a performance of “Soldier.” This triggers a bunch of PTSD flashbacks for Billy and the rest of the gang. As fake Bey, Kelly, and Michelle perform, we cut back to a battle the soldiers fought Iraq. It’s all an indictment of American mid-2000s excess — do you get it? (If you don’t get it, there’s an earlier scene where Billy has a sex fantasy while Kellie Pickler sings the national anthem.)

'Lemonade' Picks Up Four Emmy Nominations

Klaudia//July 15, 2016
The 2016 Emmy Awards nominations are in, and for the 16th straight year, HBO is the top-nominated network with a total of 94 nods. And while a few music-related entities are among the potential honorees -- Taraji P. Henson's Cookie Lyon character from Fox hit Empire was one; Broadway star Audra McDonald as Billie Holliday in HBO film Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill another -- Beyonce's HBO special/"visual album" Lemonade was shut out of the major categories.

Lemonade was, however, nominated four times. First, in the category Outstanding Production Design For A Variety, Nonfiction, Event Or Award Special; Hannah Beachler (Production Designer), Chris Britt (Art Director) and Kim Murphy (Set Decorator) are the people who stand to receive the award if the special wins against designers for Grease: Live, He Named Me Malala, the Oscars broadcast and The Wiz Live.

Second, Beyonce herself, alongside director Kahlil Joseph, are nominated in the Outstanding Directing For A Variety Special category. The duo are up against Grease: Live, the Grammy Awards broadcast, the Kennedy Center Honors broadcast and live specials from Adele and Amy Schumer. Third, editor Bill Yukich is up for Outstanding Picture Editing For Variety Programming, against episodes of Drunk History, Conan, Key & Peele and Last Week Tonight with Jon Oliver.

And finally, Lemonade as a whole has been nominated in the Outstanding Variety Special category, up against Adele Live In New York City, Amy Schumer: Live At The Apollo, The Kennedy Center Honors and The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke Prime Time Special. The two nominations (for directing and for the special as a whole) bring Beyonce's total number of nominations to four through the years; previously she was nominated in 2013 for her Super Bowl Halftime Show performance, and again in 2015 for her On The Run tour documentary alongside husband Jay Z.

Beyonce 'In No Way Tied' to Saartjie Baartman Film

Klaudia//January 6, 2016
After rumors swirling that Beyonce would be writing and starring in a film about Saartjie (Sarah) Baartman -- the South African woman who appeared in freak shows because of her physical features during the 1800s -- the multi-hyphenate is denying her involvement.

"Beyonce is in no way tied to this project," her rep told Billboard in a statement (Jan. 5). "This is an important story that should be told, however."

Baartman -- shown off in exhibits under the name Hottentot Venus -- was made a spectacle across Europe, particularly England and Paris for her voluptuous shape. She died in 1815 at the age of 26 -- five years after her arrival in Europe -- but did not receive a proper burial in her native South Africa until 2002.

Jack Devnarain, chairman of the South African Guild of Actors, echoed Beyonce's sentiment, telling Billboard over e-mail that Baartman's story deserves recognition.

"The story of Saartjie Baartman is a tale of torture and humiliation of a woman, womanhood in general and an entire culture indigenous to Southern Africa. As an episode in South African history, it describes the crippling damage of racism, sexism and exploitation," he said. "Baartman was paraded as a freak and brutally robbed of her humanity. Her story needs to be told."

Beyonce attends script reading (November 9)

"The #FeatureFilm stage reading went great tonight! We entered the #BeyHive and did her proud."

Beyoncé & Jay Z Do Not Cameo In 'The Interview'

Klaudia//December 26, 2014
Following "This Is The End," which featured cameo appearances from Rihanna, Paul Rudd, Emma Watson and pretty much every funny actor in Hollywood -- all playing variations on themselves -- it was assumed that co-directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg would continue to play with reality in "The Interview." The comedy, which was pulled from theaters this week, is built around an entertainment interview program, "Skylark Tonight," where host Dave Skylark (James Franco) interviews a variety of celebrity guests. (During an MTV special to promote the film this summer, Franco as Skylark spoke with Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea.) And when the 210-page budget for "The Interview" leaked online this month, many famous names appeared: Jay Z, Beyoncé, Brad Pitt, Neil Patrick Harris, Zooey Deschanel, Michael Vick and even Kevin Federline, among them.

But the finished film includes none of those stars in any significant capacity, if at all. (It's possible they could appear in the background or during a brief glimpse of the "Skylark Tonight" opening credits. Having seen the film twice, however, I feel comfortable saying they're absent altogether.) In fact, only three recognizable faces appear as variations on themselves in "The Interview": Rob Lowe (who reveals he's bald), Eminem (who reveals he's gay) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who reveals he likes puppies).

Beyonce & Jay-Z to Cameo in "The Interview"

Klaudia//December 5, 2014
Seth Rogen was paid more than $8.4 million and his co-star James Franco received $6.5 million for their new film The Interview, according to a Bloomberg report, which says the figures were among a cache of sensitive documents that hackers stole from Sony Pictures Entertainment that are now being released to the press in a steady stream. The report further states that the movie, on which Rogen also served as co-director as well as one of the writers and producers, cost $44 million.

Fusion also reveals that Beyonce and Jay Z are set to cameo in the film, with each of them being paid $10,000 and given first-class plane tickets.

The Interview, a comedy in which Franco and Rogen play TV journalists who are drafted by the CIA to assassinate North Korea leader Kim Jong Un, is scheduled to open Christmas Day and has been condemned by North Korean officials, who have dubbed it an "act of war."
