OWN To Air Special On WACO Theater's Annual Wearable Art Gala

June 1, 2019

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network has teamed with producer and content creator Steve Jones to broadcast a special on the WACO (Where Art Can Occur) Foundation annual flagship charitable costume event, The Wearable Art Gala, for the first time in its three-year history. Founded by Tina Knowles Lawson and Richard Lawson, the WACO performing arts space located in North Hollywood is described as a creative center where art can truly occur and provides actors, artists, and youth a place to explore their talents.

Taking place this Saturday, the gala theme this year is A Journey to The Pride Lands, a nod to Disney’s upcoming Jon Favreau-directed The Lion King live-action remake which features the voice of Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. Knowles-Carter serves as the event’s co-chair along with Solange, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams. Emmy-winner Tiffany Haddish is master of ceremonies.

The gala also recognizes Tyler Perry and other individuals for their contributions to the entertainment industry and world at large, through their art. Award presenters are Oscar and Emmy winner Viola Davis and author Shaka Senghor.

Jones is the executive producer of the primetime special through his Brand Maverick Entertainment company. This will mark his third collaboration with the network following the docuseries Black Love, one of OWN’s most-watched unscripted series debuts in network history and the Motherly Love special.

OWN Presents: Inside WACO’s Wearable Art Gala airs June 11 at 10pm ET/PT.

Beyoncé to Attend 2019 'The Lion King'-Themed Wearable Art Gala

May 25, 2019

WACO Theater will host the Third Annual Wearable Art Gala on Saturday, June 1, 2019. Co-Artistic Directors Tina Knowles Lawson and Richard Lawson founded the event, which is presented by SheaMoisture, to celebrate art and raise funds for the non-profit gallery and performance complex WACO Theater Center.

The theme for the 2019 Gala is A Journey to the Pride Lands, based on the upcoming Walt Disney feature, THE LION KING, opening nationwide July 19th. Gala guests are encouraged to create their own wearable art attire inspired by the ideals of African tradition that are at the heart of the upcoming film which stars Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Alfre Woodard as Sarabi, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar. The film is directed by Jon Favreau and utilizes pioneering filmmaking techniques to bring the treasured characters to life in a whole new way.

WACO Theater center proudly welcomes back beauty and personal care brand SheaMoisture as the Presenting Sponsor for the 2019 Wearable Art Gala. The brand has been a consistent supporter of WACO programs since 2016, working closely with the Center to passionately foster art and education initiatives for underserved youth.

Beyonce shared photos from the red carpet of the City of Hope Spirit of Life Gala. She wrote: "It was my pleasure to honor my friend Jon Platt for all the good work he does for The City of Hope. City of Hope makes creating medical miracles its priority in the fight against cancer and life-threatening diseases. If you’d like to help, you can contact them at cityofhope.org."

Attending the Oscars may haven been the opportunity of a lifetime, but there was an even cooler and more exclusive event happening after the awards show — Beyoncé and Jay-Z threw an afterparty at the Chateau Marmont in L.A.

The party was to celebrate singer Mary J. Blige, who was nominated for two Academy Awards — as Best Supporting Actress in Mudbound, as well as for her song from the movie, “Mighty River.” (She’s the first person ever to earn an Oscar nomination for both an acting performance and an original song in the same film.)

The event was held in the underground garage of the hotel on Sunset Boulevard and an insider tells Us Weekly that security was already tight hours before the soiree kicked off on Sunday, March 4.

“The underground garage of the Chateau Marmont has been transformed into a very classy, old-school Hollywood glamor lounge,” the insider says. “There was a huge crystal chandelier hanging from the center of the garage. Black carpet has been laid down with white booths set against the wall to give guests plenty of room to dance. There was also a classic two-door coupe sports car in the center of the room.”

The insider tells Us that guests at the party, which started at about 11:30 p.m., entered and exited the celebration via a walkway that has been shielded with blackout curtains.

“They already blocked off the driveway,” a second source told Us before the event. “A lot of hotel guests are mad.”

The music power couple hosted 150 guests at the bash and the invite said, “No sitting, you have to be up and dancing.”
Jay-Z and Beyonce don't mess around when it comes to Halloween, and this year was no different with them dressing up as one of rap's legendary couples for Kelly Rowland's Costume Couture Party.

Jay paid homage to fellow Brooklyn rapper Notorious B.I.G., while Beyonce dressed up as Lil' Kim. Kelly threw the party with Lenny S. Sunday night at new WeHo hot spot Poppy.
