'Renaissance' Concert Film International Tickets Go on Sale Nov. 9

Klaudia//October 26, 2023
Beyoncé is holding two premieres for her highly anticipated concert film Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé: The world premiere will take place in London on Nov. 30 and the U.S. premiere will be held in Los Angeles on Nov. 25.

The events will take place days before Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment and AMC Entertainment debut the film in theaters on Dec. 1. Tickets for international territories — including Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, South America and the Caribbean — will go on sale Nov. 9 at BeyonceFilm.com.

Beyoncé released the trailer for the concert doc about her Renaissance World Tour, the singer’s highest-grossing tour to date, at her final show in Kansas City earlier this month, and tickets are currently available in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé follows the superstar singer embarking on the monumental tour in support of Renaissance, the album that helped her become the most decorated artist in the history of the Grammy Awards. Locations weren’t announced for the premieres, but an invite for the world premiere in London included the dress code “formal opulence.” The dress code for the L.A. premiere? “Cozy opulence” — a play off the singer’s song “Cozy” from Renaissance.

Beyonce in Final Talks to Release 'Renaissance' Concert Film Through AMC Theatres

Klaudia//October 1, 2023
A film based on Beyonce‘s smash hit Renaissance World Tour is in advanced talks to distribute directly to AMC Theatres, sources with knowledge of the project told Variety.

Mega-agency CAA held preliminary talks with major studios and streamers two weeks ago, another source added, urging the players to be ready to bid on a project the icon has been developing for years — one that would include elements of her top-grossing 2023 live shows, parts of the long-gestating visual album “Renaissance” and a documentary-style account of making the record and building out the tour (Blue Ivy Carter cameos surely to come).

The project is eyeing a Dec. 1 wide release, added insiders. By its end, the Renaissance World Tour is expected to gross close to $560 million in ticket sales, reports said.

A spokesperson for AMC Theatres did not respond to multiple requests for comment. CAA had no comment on the matter. A spokesperson for Beyonce could not be reached for comment.

The Beyonce deal follows on the heels of one Taylor Swift brokered for: a straightforward concert film based on her widely-attended Eras Tour. The terms are incredibly favorable for Swift, reports have said, who self-financed the project and will take more than half of box receipts. Beyonce will receive the same arrangement, and stands to pocket more than 50% of the worldwide grosses, an insider added. The industry is tracking Swift’s AMC experiment to open north of $100 million in October.

Beyoncé Shopping New Renaissance Visual Album That Was Shot in Secret By Nadia Lee Cohen

Klaudia//September 2, 2023
Beyoncé is coming to Los Angeles this weekend to play three sold-out shows at SoFi Stadium as part of her Renaissance World Tour, and there will surely be plenty of Hollywood executives in the crowd — including some lucky executives who have already seen a piece of Beyoncé-produced media that the general public does not yet know exists.

To that end, Above the Line has exclusively learned that Queen Bey and her Parkwood Entertainment banner are shopping a new Renaissance visual album to studios and streamers, though there haven’t been any takers just yet.

The film was directed by Nadia Lee Cohen, a British artist, photographer, and rising filmmaker who has shot numerous magazine covers and music videos, having worked with artists such as Tyler the Creator, A$AP Rocky, Katy Perry, and Kali Uchis, and brands including Adidas, Balenciaga, Gucci, and Valentino.

Sources say that Renaissance is “artsy” and in line with Beyoncé’s other visual albums Lemonade and Black Is King, but also “weirder,” saying it hasn’t been Disney-fied like the latter film, which won an Emmy for its striking costumes.

An Oral History of Beyoncé in Austin Powers: Goldmember

Klaudia//July 17, 2022
Beyoncé has given the world innumerable gifts: the lyric “tell MCI to cut the phone poles,” the Bob Fosse–inspired “Single Ladies” dance, the infamous Met Gala elevator drama, decadent pregnancy announcements, this GIF, Coachella. Which Beyoncé souvenir am I most grateful for? I choose what now feels like an anomaly in her rarefied, holier-than-holy pop career: Foxxy Cleopatra, a.k.a. “a whole lotta woman.”

Austin Powers in Goldmember, the third installment in a franchise that launched to modest success and ballooned to an abiding cultural phenomenon, turns 20 this summer. Destiny’s Child would release one final album in 2004, but Goldmember — the seventh-highest-grossing movie of 2002 — marks Beyoncé’s transition from girl-group captain to singular superstar. It’s when Beyoncé Knowles became simply Beyoncé, even if it feels nothing like the Beyoncé we know today. With the movie came her first solo single (the underrated funk jam “Work It Out“) and a bridge to the image-defining smash “Crazy in Love,” generally considered her true breakthrough.

At the time, Beyoncé was anxious to prove herself as an actress. (Crossover fame remained very important in the early 2000s. Just ask Mariah Carey.) Her only credit was Carmen: A Hip Hopera, MTV’s contemporary spin on the classic French opera. That’s where Goldmember producer John Lyons got the idea to enlist her to play Foxxy, a stylish FBI agent who used to shag Austin (Mike Myers) and moonlights as a nightclub singer at Studio 69. As Beyoncé recounted in 2002, she auditioned twice. “I read with Mike and just tried to be the straight guy. When I left, I was convinced I wasn’t going to get it,” she told Newsweek. For her callback, she “went back in wearing a Pam Grier–like catsuit, an Afro wig, and had memorized every blaxploitation film ever made.” Her fate was sealed.

Beyonce's 'Black Is King' among juried Emmy Award winners

Klaudia//August 28, 2021
While the 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards are still a few weeks away, the trophies have already begun rolling out for some of the past year’s biggest shows.

Beyoncé’s Black is King, The Masked Singer, The Simpsons and Love, Death and Robots are among early winners for this year’s Emmy Awards, as the Television Academy announced juried category honourees in the fields of animation, costume, interactive programming and motion design.

Juried categories are decided by a panel of professionals in the appropriate peer groups with the possibility of one, more than one or no entry being awarded an Emmy. There are no nominees but a one-step evaluation and voting procedure with open discussions of each piece of work.

Outstanding individual achievement in animation was awarded to Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal, The Simpsons and four recognitions for Netflix’s Love, Death + Robots. Costumes for a variety, nonfiction or reality program went to Black is King, The Masked Singer, and Sherman’s Showcase Black History Month Spectacular.

The juried awards will be presented at the 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which will take place in Los Angeles on September 11 and 12. An edited presentation of the ceremonies will be broadcast on FXX on September 18.

The Primetime Emmy Awards will follow on September 19, hosted by Cedric the Entertainer with a limited in-person audience in downtown Los Angeles.

Inside The Visual World Of Beyoncé And 'Black Is King'

Klaudia//March 13, 2021
For Women's History Month 2021, GRAMMY.com is celebrating some of the women artists nominated at the 2021 GRAMMY Awards show. Today, we honor Beyoncé, who's currently nominated for nine GRAMMYs.

In a 2011 interview, Beyoncé revealed the things she wanted to accomplish before her 40th birthday. "I would love to direct—continue to learn videos and maybe by then a film, a short film," she told Access Online(opens in a new tab). " a documentary, I love documentaries." The singer will turn 40 in September having accomplished that goal.

Since that interview, the global pop star has continued to steadily hone her craft to become one of today's most influential visual storytellers in pop music. She began experimenting with visuals on her 2006 sophomore solo album, B'Day, but it wasn't until years later, when she released her surprise 2013 self-titled record that she delivered a true "visual album" that pushed the envelope(opens in a new tab)—every song had(opens in a new tab) a music video and all visuals were released together without any promotion.

The 2016 critically acclaimed Lemonade added a narrative between each music video—something Beyoncé hadn't done before—to create a cohesive look at Black generational trauma. In 2019, she released the GRAMMY-winning documentary Homecoming, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at her preparation for her historic Coachella performance in between concert footage.

With the critically-acclaimed visual albums and documentary under her belt, she turned her sights to another visual goal. Last year, Beyoncé released Black Is King, the feature-length film inspired by her work with Disney on the 2019 remake of The Lion King. The nearly 90-minute film that premiered on Disney+ started as a quick test shoot in Beyoncé's backyard in The Hamptons but ultimately took more than a year to make and spanned several countries.

Spotify's Dissect Debuts "Black Is King" Limited Series Special

Klaudia//February 2, 2021
A seven episode mini-series special to commemorate the prolific Beyoncé project that took the internet (and Bey-hive) by storm: Black is King premiered last week on Spotify.

Dissect is a serialized music podcast hosted by creator Cole Cuchna available exclusively on Spotify. The podcast series takes an academic approach to analyzing iconic albums that has had an undeniable influence on music and hip-hop culture.

In this surprise drop, Cole is joined by special guest co-host, Dr. Titi Shodiya (Dope Labs) to dive into an in-depth exploration of the lyrical metaphors, historical anecdotes and nods to African spirituality embedded all throughout the project. The series breaks down BIK’s commentary on White supremacy proliferated through Western religion; spoken word poems like Joshua Abah’s “Uncle Sam” featured in the project, and its uncanny parallels to featured rappers’ work like Kendrick Lamar’s “Wesley’s Theory”; and the story of how one Black female artist’s stolen and appropriated work led to the smash hit, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” while becoming the key reason behind Beyoncé creating Black Is King.

In the final bonus epiosde Cole and Titi talk to co-director Kwasi Fordjour, stylist Zerina Akers, and music director Derek Dixie about their work on the film.

Beyoncé's 'Black Is King' - Behind the Visuals With DP Santiago Gonzalez

Klaudia//November 25, 2020
Beyoncé’s “Black Is King” earned nine Grammy nominations Tuesday, including song of the year and record of the year. The singer, who led the nominations, also received a nomination for Best Music Film. It was the fourth time she has been nominated in that category after winning for Netflix’s “Homecoming” and getting nominations for “Lemonade” and “Beyoncé & JAY-Z: On the Run Tour.”

“Black Is King,” now streaming on Disney Plus, was executive produced by Beyoncé as a visual companion to her 2019 release, “The Lion King: The Gift.”

Cinematographer Santiago Gonzalez talked with Variety about how the visuals for the Grammy-nominated music film came together and collaborating with Beyoncé.

What conversations did you have with Beyoncé regarding the visuals for “Black is King?”

The project evolved as we shot. Most of the conversations about the look of the different sections I shot were discussed more with each specific director. I was in a lot of prep meetings with Beyoncé but those were after she and the director had landed on a general look and feel for the section. These meetings would be logistical and world-building and at times I would present to her my ideas for the lighting so we could get more granular about what was needed for each day.

Beyoncé leads Grammy nominations with 9

Klaudia//November 24, 2020
Beyoncé is the one to beat at the 63rd Grammy Awards, snagging an eye-popping nine nominations.

The Recording Academy unveiled this year's nominees Tuesday via livestream.

The singer is up for record of the year for "Black Parade" as well as "Savage," her collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion. "Black Parade" also got a nod in the song of the year category. And "Brown Skin Girl" is a contender for best music video.

Beyoncé, who now has a lifetime 79 nominations and 24 wins, is the most-nominated female artist in Grammy history. She's tied with Paul McCartney for the second most-nominated artist of all time, trailing only her husband, Jay-Z (who received three nominations this year), and Quincy Jones – both with 80 career nominations.

If she takes home four gilded gramophones at the 2021 awards show in January, she'll become the female artist with the most Grammy wins. Eight trophies and she'll make history as the performer with the most Grammy wins of all time.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the Grammys are moving ahead on an in-person ceremony Jan. 31 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The event will be broadcast on CBS and hosted by Trevor Noah of "The Daily Show."

British Vogue's December 2020 Cover Story

Klaudia//November 1, 2020
Artist, businesswoman, perfectionist – the one woman powerhouse that is Beyoncé talks family, fashion and philanthropy (and bee hives) with Edward Enninful, in British Vogue’s December 2020 cover interview.

It was always going to be special. How could it not be? And yet I’m not sure I could have predicted how having Beyoncé – an icon of music, fashion and culture for more than 20 years – on British Vogue’s cover this month would finally come to pass.

As I logged on to my laptop one evening in early autumn to oversee the 12-hour shoot more than 3,000 miles away, in New York, I felt the thrill of the new. It was the culmination of months of preparation. “It takes enormous patience to rock with me,” Beyoncé Knowles-Carter wryly notes in our interview on the following pages, in a rare and rounded glimpse into her world. But let me tell you this: rocking with Beyoncé is electric.

Our creative discussions began during the early days of lockdown, and an idea quickly took shape. Social justice, a pandemic – it was clear that this was the moment for something extra. As we all know, it has been an extremely tough year for fashion, and so we wanted to create a no- holds-barred celebration. Who, after all, has the ability to elevate and excite like Queen B? And so we approached some of our favourite designers, who each made a custom piece for a 20-page extravaganza with a purpose: to uplift an industry.
