'Homecoming' Reached 1.1M US Viewers in Its First Day

May 15, 2019

Netflix’s critically-acclaimed concert special Homecoming: A Film By Beyoncé reached 1.1 million U.S. viewers on its April 17 premiere date, according to data newly provided by Nielsen via its SVOD Content Ratings system.

Introduced in October 2017, SVOD Content Ratings measures the viewership of subscription video on demand (SVOD) services via audio recognition software installed in 44,000 U.S. homes that contain Nielsen's TV set meters. While the highly-secretive Netflix has stated in the past that Nielsen's ratings are “not even close” to being accurate, it is the most reliable measure yet of SVOD viewership data.

According to the numbers compiled by Nielsen, the audience for Homecoming was 63% African American on the day of its premiere and 55% over its first seven days, more than any other Netflix original film or series analyzed to date (the closest was Bird Box with 24%). Hispanics, meanwhile, made up 15% of viewers, while Asians comprised 5%.

'Lemonade' Returns to Top 10 on Billboard 200

April 29, 2019

It’s a big week for Beyoncé on the Billboard 200 albums chart, as the diva claims a pair of concurrent top 10 albums for the first time.

Her 2016 album Lemonade re-enters the list at No. 9 following its wide streaming release, and Homecoming: The Live Album jumps 7-4 after its first full chart tracking week of activity. Further, two more Beyoncé albums dot the list, as both I Am… Sasha Fierce and her self-titled set re-enter the tally.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new May 4-dated chart, where Lemonade re-enters at No. 9, will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on April 30.

Homecoming: The Live Album rises 7-4 after its first full chart tracking week of activity, earning 57,000 equivalent album units (up 47%) in the week ending April 25. The album gains in both SEA and TEA units, but declines in album sales (8,000; down 43%). On the April 26-dated chart (reflecting the tracking week ending April 18), the album debuted on the list from just two days of activity, as it was released on April 17.

Beyonce's 'Homecoming' Album Debuts in Top 10 on Billboard 200

April 23, 2019

Beyoncé’s surprise-released Homecoming: The Live Album debuts at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 chart with 38,000 units earned from just two days of tracking activity (with 14,000 of that sum in album sales). The album dropped with no warning in the very early hours of Wednesday, April 17, and the tracking week for the chart ended on April 18. (Billboard’s album charts’ tracking week runs Friday through Thursday.)

Homecoming: The Live Album was released to digital retail and streaming services shortly after the premiere of Beyoncé’s Homecoming film on Netflix at 12:01 a.m. on April 17. Both projects chronicle Beyoncé’s headlining performances at the 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Homecoming: The Live Album is Beyoncé’s eighth top 10 album as a soloist. She also recently visited the top 10 as one-half of The Carters (alongside husband Jay-Z) with 2018’s No. 2-peaking Everything Is Love.

It’s possible that Homecoming: The Live Album could rise higher on next week’s Billboard 200 chart (dated May 4), after its first full tracking week of activity.

Beyonce's Netflix Deal Worth a Whopping $60 Million

April 20, 2019

Netflix has become a destination for television visionaries like Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy, with deals worth $100 million and $250 million, respectively, and top comedians like Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle ($40 million and $60 million, respectively). The streaming giant, which just announced it’s added nearly 10 million subscribers in Q1, is honing in on music, too, landing a three-project deal with Beyonce worth a whopping $60 million, sources tell Variety.

The first of the three specials is “Homecoming,” the behind-the-scenes documentary chronicling her 2018 Coachella performance — a massive spectacle of dance, visuals and music that reaffirmed Beyonce’s moniker of Queen Bey — which premiered on April 17. The price tag on this installment, for which Beyonce Knowles-Carter is credited as executive producer, writer and director, hovers around $20 million. Beyonce’s rep did not respond to Variety’s requests for comment; Netflix declined comment for this story, although a source at the company disputed the financial terms of the deal.

According to Vulture, HBO was also interested in the project, having had a long relationship with Knowles-Carter (the cable network aired her 2016 “Lemonade” film as well as her 2014 “On the Run Tour” concert special with husband Jay-Z and 2013 doc “Life Is But a Dream”), but backed out when Netflix came in with a richer offer. (HBO has not responded to Variety‘s request for comment.)

Beyonce Released 'Homecoming' Live Album Along With Netflix Documentary

April 17, 2019

Beyonce’s history-making 2018 Coachella performance is now available as both a documentary and a live album. Homecoming is the expected Netflix documentary that the singer has been teasing for the past few weeks and also the title of the accompanying live album, which unexpectedly accompanied the arrival of the film. While the trailer for the Homecoming film has been circulating on Youtube for the past week, plans to release the performance as an album were kept mum until Beyonce herself tweeted the link at midnight PST.

With Homecoming the film detailing the creation and performance of the set, Homecoming the album features the full concert, which included Beyonce hits like “7/11,” “Crazy In Love,” “Formation,” “Single Ladies,” and her Coachella rendition of “Lift Every Voice And Sing,” the Black National Anthem. The tracklist also features two bonus tracks: “I Been On,” a tribute to Beyonce’s hometown of Houston, Texas, and a cover of Frankie Beverly And Maze’s “Before I Let Go,” a Black family reunion staple.

Homecoming is out now via Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records. Get it here. The Homecoming film is now available on Netflix.

Netflix Teases Possible Beyoncé ‘Homecoming’ Documentary

April 7, 2019

Last week, a rumor started to circulate regarding a possible Beyoncé documentary making its way to Netflix. Sources close to the singer also indicated that she's been in the studio working on some new music, but it's currently unclear if there's a follow-up to Lemonade on the way anytime soon. However, it's starting to look as though the first part of the rumor might be true after all, as Netflix has sent the Beyhive into a frenzy with a simple tweet.

Netflix teased a project entitled Homecoming on their social media accounts. While there's no more information besides an April 17 release date, fans immediately connected the font and color theme in the teaser image with that of Beyoncé's Coachella 2018 merch.

While it's not exactly a confirmation, it's starting to look very likely that fans will be getting a behind-the-scenes look at Bey's legendary set at the 2018 festival. Sources did state that the documentary would "be tied to her Coachella 2018 performance" and will feature unspecified additional footage. Regardless, we won't have to wait much longer to find out what Homecoming has in store.

Beyonce Is Working on New Music and a Netflix Special?

April 5, 2019

Beyoncé has one busy summer ahead of her! While the singer is gearing up for the July 19 release of Disney’s The Lion King remake, in which she voices Nala, she has two other projects in the pipeline, multiple sources confirm exclusively in the new issue of Us Weekly.

Beyoncé, 37, does not have a full album on the way, according to one source, but she has recorded a “couple of new tracks a deluxe album filled with old songs.”

What’s more? The 23-time Grammy winner is also working with Netflix on a documentary, which a second insider tells Us “will be tied to her Coachella 2018 performance” with additional footage.

The new music will be the first solo material that Beyoncé has dropped since her surprise 2016 visual album, Lemonade. In 2018, she and husband Jay-Z released their long-awaited joint album, Everything Is Love, in the midst of their coheadlining On the Run II stadium tour.

R&B superstar Beyonce is "pumped" to follow in her husband Jay-Z's groundbreaking footsteps and headline Britain's biggest rock festival Glastonbury in June. Speculation started earlier this week that the Crazy In Love hitmaker would be one of the big acts to play to thousands of music fans at the annual event after her pal Chris Martin's band Coldplay announced its slot. Beyonce has now confirmed the news, saying, "This really is the biggest festival in the world and I cannot wait to perform there. Everyone who attends is really appreciative of music and is in such a good mood that entire weekend." Beyonce watched from the side of the stage at the 2008 Glastonbury as her rapper husband thrilled the crowd with a storming show following huge criticism over a hip-hop act headlining the traditionally rock-oriented event. It is also rumoured British rockers The Libertines will follow up their comeback gig at last year's Reading and Leeds festivals with an appearance at this year's Glastonbury, which takes place in Somerset, England.
Beyonce and U2 are reportedly confirmed to join Coldplay as headliners of this year's Glastonbury festival. Festival organisers are yet to officially announce the headliners, but U2 have long-since been rumoured to be playing this year's event. They cancelled their slot last year due to singer Bono having surgery. Organiser Michael Eavis previously said he'd asked the band to play at the 2011 festival. Eavis had also said of another 2011 headliner: "There's an American artist that I’ve been wanting to have for years and yonks and yonks and yonks." Now gossip website Holymoly.com has claimed that U2 and Beyonce are both booked, with Coldplay already revealed as headliners. Beyonce visited the festival in 2008, when her husband Jay-Z headlined, but she has never performed at the event. Glastonbury 2011 takes place at Worthy Farm, Pilton. Billed music takes place on June 24-26, with the site opening on June 22. Last year Gorillaz replaced U2 as headliners, with Muse and Stevie Wonder also playing headline slots.
During the BET Awards in 2003 I witnessed the makings of a real relationship between two overly focused individuals willing to sacrifice and make time for each other in the midst of accomplishing their personalized greatness. I was the personal assistant to Beyonce while she prepared for the debut of her new single Deja Vu. I can recall having the song on repeat throughout the duration of my flight from Chicago to LA and feeling captivated by the 808's and horns. There was something about the song that made me feel as if I were being transported to another place all in the name of love. Like most people, I soon realized that the passion hidden behind Beyonce's vocals was fueled by her devotion and love for none other than Jay Z. I sat there in amazement as I watched Beyonce go over every step as if her life depended on it. I'd heard all the stories and rumors that she was evil and possibly the daughter of Satan but none of that surfaced. A prime example of her down-t-earth-ness was displayed when she happened to be thirsty and it was my job to get her some water but she chose to go with me in order to ease her mind. She was sweet and reminded me of that home girl we all have that no matter what she just wants to laugh at the end of the day. Everything was going well until Beyonce was informed that Jay Z missed his flight and wouldn't be able to make it to the show and perform. Her face went sour as she took a moment to squat on the floor and pout. She wasn't sad about him not doing his verse but the fact that she wouldn't see him as soon as she'd planned. She couldn't help but mumble to her mother that she missed him. She forced herself not to cry. Stood up and yelled from the top of her lungs.... "let's take it from the top." The passion and determination in her voice echoed throughout the empty theater as she stood on top of a short ladder that served as her entrance wagon. Read more...
Sam: To the new generation, your most prolific work has been with Beyonce. Having collaborated with her for so long, what is it about her that sets her apart from the competition?

Frank: Beyonce is the best in the game because she rehearses, plans and is very creative. She is nice, she is beautiful, she gets “it”, she is honest. She does not waste your time in rehearsal. When you’re in rehearsals you work very hard which is exciting. You might say everyone rehearses, but Beyonce is full-out, working harder than the dancers. She comes from a place of love for what she does. Most female dancers and performers don’t love it like her. She never complains when it hurts; she’s always in her heels killing it. She is a beast on stage and in rehearsal. She is so gracious, so fine, but not a bitch (she will push you to get the best out of you and I love that sh**) and that makes her a gift to this business and the world. She might not be from this planet (laughs). I would love to visit the planet she’s from (laughs) because I bet there are some amazing people there!

Sam: Beyonce’s ‘I Am…World Tour’ DVD was recently released and featured her traveling around the globe. With a new Beyonce project around the corner, how have these experiences – if at all – been fused into her upcoming musical and performance output?

Frank: I have heard some of the new project, but I can’t talk about it…yet.

Sam: Is there anything – at all – you can share with us about we can expect from the LP?

Frank: Once again, I cannot talk about it…yet (laughs). Read more...
Jay-Z snubbed the chance to watch his wife Beyonce from the VIP area at U.S. President Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony last year (09) - because he wanted to "feel the energy of everyday people" in the audience. Beyonce was invited to sing for Obama on the evening he was sworn into office as America's new leader in January last year (09), and she was close to tears as she sang her rendition of Etta James' At Last. And despite an offer to watch his wife from the wings, Jay-Z felt compelled to soak up the electric atmosphere by standing in the crowd. In his memoirs, entitled Decoded, he writes, "(I wanted to) feel the energy of everyday people. It was unbelievable to see us - me, Beyonce, Puff (Sean 'Diddy' Combs), and other people I've known for so long - sharing in this rite of passage."
Beyoncé has confirmed that she will not join her husband Jay-Z in Australia this December when he connects with U2. In the past, the "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" singer has joined her husband onstage during his concerts, but this time she will be hard at work on her next album. "It's not going to happen," Jay-Z tells Australia's Daily Telegraph. "I'm just shooting down the rumours before they start." Jay-Z also cleared up rumors about his wife's possible pregnancy, saying that there is "no truth" to them. "They do that every slow news day. This is like the fifth time. I think we have five kids now," he says. "No truth, but I wonder when people will stop giving it relevance? You can't do the same subject. At least change the subject, they have to find a new one."
Is Beyonce set to perform at next year's Glastonbury Festival? Reports today reveal that Knowles is currently in talks with the event's boss Michael Eavis, with the possibility of appearing on stage at the festival next June (2011). If Bootylicious Bey agrees, she'll follow in the footsteps of her rap star husband Jay-Z, who headlined the same festival in 2008. "After all the furore over Jay-Z playing Glasto, it went off brilliantly and he had a wonderful time," revealed an event insider to the Daily Star. "Beyonce was, of course, in the wings soaking up the atmosphere and told everyone how happy she was at Worthy Farm," continued the source. "Getting her to perform in her own right seems the ideal next step."
Jay-Z is reportedly planning a concert with British rockers Coldplay on New Years Eve. The Empire State of Mind rapper, who is fresh from touring with Eminem is hoping to take to the stage in Las Vegas with Chris Martin and Co to welcome 2011 with a bang. Reports suggest that the deal to secure Jigga and Coldplay is worth millions with insiders claiming than his wife, Beyonce will also play a concert in Sin City on 31st December to be close her rapper hubby. A source told the New York Post: "Organisers have spent millions securing the acts. The word is that Beyoncé is now looking for a Vegas New Year's gig so she will be in town with Jay,"
The name Beyonce may not have rung a bell for little Mohamed Saleh. But a kiss and a hug from the American R&B singer were all it took to make the 4-year-old's day. Yesterday afternoon, he met Beyonce, 28, at the Viva-University Children's Cancer Centre of the National University Hospital (NUH). Mohamed Saleh has cancer in his right foot and has been a patient at NUH since last November. His mother, 32-year-old housewife Kamsinah Bahari, told The New Paper on Sunday that they were told of Beyonce's visit by NUH staff on Friday. She said her son had greeted Beyonce and kissed her hand. And she then gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Beyonce's visit had also been a treat for Madam Kamsinah, who is a fan. Though a shy Saleh, who was wearing a face mask, did not speak much about his encounter with Beyonce when we met him, his eyes, which brightened at the mention of her name, clearly indicated his delight. Together with US group Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce performed a sold-out concert at Fort Canning Park's F1 Rocks Singapore with LG last night. During the 20-minute closed-door visit at NUH, Beyonce, who arrived at 4.15pm, serenaded 30 kids and their parents with acoustic versions of three songs including hits Halo and Irreplaceable, Madam Kamsinah said. Ever the professional, Beyonce had taken along a group of backup singers. Read more...
The pop star Beyoncé and rock band Aerosmith will be performing in Abu Dhabi as part of the Formula One racing weekend. Beyoncé, the singer of hits including ‘Single Ladies’, will open the Grand Prix festivities with a performance on October 29, sources close to the organisers have confirmed. Aerosmith, known for theme song to Armageddon ‘I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing’ will perform the grand finale for the event, following Formula One’s first day/night race on November 1. Reports that No Doubt and Nelly Furtardo are also playing are incorrect, according to sources. The two acts who will perform on the other two night will be confirmed early next week. A statement from Flash Entertainment released this morning read: “Flash Entertainment can confirm there will be a fantastic line-up of artists performing on Yas Island during the race weekend. "Media speculation appearing today announcing Yas Island concerts is factually incorrect in the reporting of artist line-up, capacities, ticket holder access and location of performances. "All media have been invited to attend our launch press conference on September 28 where we will be announcing details of the activities planned.”
