Beyoncé Tells Anecdote About Prince in Foreword to New Book

Klaudia//October 13, 2017
Prince may have been known for his brilliance in more ways than one, but Beyoncé is highlighting a lesser-known talent of the late legendary artist -- his comedic timing.

The Lemonade singer penned the foreword of Prince: A Private View -- a photo retrospective of the pop icon's life, featuring the photography of Afshin Shahidi (father of Black-ish star Yara Shahidi) -- on shelves Oct. 24. In one excerpt, Queen Bey admits she almost lost it while performing with the "Purple Rain" rocker at the 2004 GRAMMYs, because of how he ended the performance.

“Prince’s timing was genius and his sense of humor, spontaneous and unexpected," Beyonce, 34, writes. "At the end of 'Purple Rain'/'Let’s Go Crazy'/'Crazy in Love' medley, I had no idea he would say what he did. We did talk about making a face but when he blurted out 'Don’t hate us ‘cause we fab,' it took everything I had to keep my composure."

Remembering the performance, we can see why it'd be hard not to!

Backing up, Beyoncé begins the excerpt by telling the story of how the two prepared for their spectacular GRAMMYs appearance.

Beyonce Blasts to No. 3 on Billboard Hot 100 With 'Mi Gente'

Klaudia//October 9, 2017
Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)" tops the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a third week, marking a new longevity record for a hit by an unaccompanied female rapper. Plus, J Balvin and Willy William's "Mi Gente" blasts from No. 21 to No. 3, sparked by its newly added featured artist, Beyonce; Imagine Dragons' "Thunder" rumbles 17-7; and Demi Lovato hits a new best career rank, as "Sorry Not Sorry" rises 10-8 on the latest chart (dated Oct. 21).

As we do every Monday, let's run down the top 10 of the Hot 100, which blends all-genre streaming, airplay and sales data. All charts will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (Oct. 10).

"Mi Gente" surges from No. 21 to No. 3 on the Hot 100 (after previously reaching No. 19), after the first full week of tracking for its new remix featuring Beyonce, scoring the chart's greatest gains in sales and streaming. It rockets 34-1 on Digital Song Sales (79,000 sold, up 436 percent, with 87 percent of its sales from its new remix) and 14-5 on Streaming Songs (28.7 million, up 50 percent), while also climbing 32-29 on Radio Songs (46 million, up 18 percent).

J Balvin and William each earn their first Hot 100 top 10, while Beyonce banks her 17th (as a soloist, to go along with 10 as a member of Destiny's Child). She had last reached the region with Lemonade track "Formation," which spent a week at No. 10 (upon its debut) in May 2016. She notches her highest rank since "Drunk in Love," featuring JAY-Z, peaked at No. 2 on Feb. 15, 2014.

Here's How Beyonce Joined J Balvin & Willy William's 'Mi Gente'

Klaudia//September 30, 2017
On Thursday evening, Beyonce shared a 20 second video on Instagram announcing she had joined a remix of J Balvin and Willy William's hit "Mi Gente" and would donate all her proceeds to disaster relief charities for Puerto Rico, Mexico and the other recently affected Caribbean islands.

Following in the footsteps of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's record-breaking success with the Justin Bieber-featuring "Despacito" remix, Beyonce's good news with a good cause marked a big moment for Latin music in the mainstream. With Queen Bey singing in both Spanish and English on the track, it and its star-studded music video racked up millions of streams in its first 24 hours, topping iTunes' sales charts in 30 countries and YouTube's trend ranking, and looks prime to hit the Hot 100 top 10.

Here's how the collaboration came to be:

A remake of an original song by French DJ Willy Williams, "Mi Gente" had the makings of a global hit when it was first released in April and immediately sparked talk of a general market remix. "But we wanted it to live for a while and get as big as it could on a global scale in Spanish," says Rebeca Leon, who co-manages Balvin with Balvin's label, Universal Music Latin Entertainment (UMLE).

The "lofty goal," says UMLE president Victor Gonzalez, "was to make it No. 1 on Spotify at a global level."

Beyoncé Cheers Up Lady Gaga with Gifts

Klaudia//September 28, 2017
Beyoncé showed why she is the Queen, showering Lady Gaga in gifts to let her fellow singer know she’s loved amid her fibromyalgia battle.

The singer, 36, gifted her “Telephone” partner, 31, an Ivy Park sweatshirt and flowers, which the latter shared in two separate posts on Instagram.

“Not having a good pain day,” Gaga wrote in the caption. “Thank you honey B for sending me this comfy sweatshirt. Keeps me warm outside in a hammock so I can be w the trees, and the sky, and the sun and take deep breaths. Feel so lucky to have so much love.”

In a second post, Gaga shared a photo of red roses along with a card. “Thank you so much honey B,” the singer wrote. “Miss you. this was so kind. If I hadn’t seen your videos on TV at grandmas house after I got dropped from def jam records, I would have given up. You inspire us all. The dream you embody kept me going.”

Beyonce Auditioned For 'Josie and the Pussycats'

Klaudia//September 28, 2017
While the actresses in 2001's cult hit Josie and the Pussycats only sang backing vocals for Letters to Cleo singer Kay Hanley, filmmakers apparently had a number of notable musicians audition for the film -- including Beyoncé Knowles, who would later become one of the biggest stars on the planet.

The revelation came as part of an interview with Billboard, who were speaking with directors Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan as well as star Rachael Leigh Cook and Hanley ahead of a concert Tuesday night in Los Angeles in which Hanley played songs from the Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack for the first time live.

“The list of people who auditioned to be in the movie. The fact that Beyoncé, Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes and Aaliyah came in to audition was crazy,” Elfont said. “I think it was 2000. We read Left Eye twice. She really wanted to play the part. Beyoncé was really quiet and shy. Who knew? It was a comedy and Aaliyah was more serious and thoughtful. We wanted someone who could really play the comedy.”

When the film was in production, Beyoncé would have been well-known as a part of Destiny's Child but wasn't the global phenom that she would later become.

Had she won the role of Valerie Brown -- eventually played in the film by Rosario Dawson -- the band's meteoric rise in the film would likely have turned into a metaphor for Beyoncé herself in the years following the film's release and subsequent box office failure.

Beyoncé's team denies she's headlining hurricane relief concert

Klaudia//September 22, 2017
Beyoncé’s first concert after childbirth might not be coming as soon as some had hoped.

A rep for the singer denied an Us Weekly report from earlier Thursday that claimed Beyoncé and her rapper husband, JAY-Z, would team up for a benefit concert in New York in support of those affected by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.

The report had stated the concert would take place on Oct. 17 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

A spokesperson for JAY-Z's streaming service Tidal, meanwhile, said nothing has been announced about its annual benefit show.

"TIDAL will be hosting our annual benefit concert with details to soon follow," the rep said. "We have not announced or confirmed any line up or partner organizations, but stay tuned."

Michel Gondry Has an Unreleased Beyoncé Collaboration

Klaudia//September 7, 2017
Michel Gondry, the independent French filmmaker who perhaps most famously directed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, says he has an unfinished Beyoncé collaboration waiting in the wings.

During an interview with Canadian publication La Presse, Gondry spoke of his future plans, saying, "I have two projects: a rather personal film about my creative wanderings while shooting a movie, with rather extreme and illogical things, and a TV series for an American channel."

He then added that he had worked with Bey on a mysterious project that was put on hold when she got pregnant last year. "Unfortunately, it's not out yet because she twins," he said. "But it's a finished clip very, very well, I think."

Aside from the many feature films he's made, Gondry also has extensive experience making critically acclaimed music videos for artists including Daft Punk, The White Stripes, and Björk.

Whatever it is, we can't wait to see it! Truly a dream collaboration.

Klaudia//September 7, 2017
The IVY PARK 2017 fall/winter campaign introduces four new faces. Actress Laverne Cox and dancer Karen McDonald pose alongside models Grace Bol and Ralph Souffrant for a diverse representation of beauty and strength.

Each muse is styled in its classic pieces, updated for the fall season. The color palette is reworked to include a range of shades like deep teal, porcelain blue, chili red, scarlet and dusty pink. The hues are colorblocked on asymmetrical jackets, sweats and T-shirts that add a new level to activewear. Co-founder Beyoncé shared the inspiration behind the unique campaign:

"Beyoncegraphica" is out now!

Klaudia//September 7, 2017
BeyonceOnline.org received a review copy of the "Beyoncegraphica" biography by Chris Roberts that was announced in July. As the book hits stores today, we share our thoughts on the release. Head over to Amazon to buy the book now!

Just like a proper biography, "Beyoncegraphica" describes the history of Beyonce's life and career, but what's distinctive about it is that it contains graphs and charts. They are used to present almost everything that you can think of: music sales and streaming, charts, awards, profits, social media followers, charity activities. However, we're not just flooded with numbers and cold facts, we can find out how many costume changes Beyonce had each tour, how many people named their children after her, what's in her tour rider, the significance of the number 4 and many, many more. What is more, many graphs compare Beyonce to other artist so we can see how influential she actually is compared to others. In the text part of the book, we can find many quotes, from Beyonce, her family and co-workers to fellow artists and industry people. Not only does the book detail her history, but it also shows her influence. Additionally, it is filled with pictures.

In my opinion, "Beyoncegraphica" is very appealing considering its focus on visuals. The information that are well-known are presented in a new and interesting way. I would definitely recommend reading it, whether you're new to the BeyHive or you know Beyonce's history by heart.

Copenhagen University offers course on Beyoncé

Klaudia//September 2, 2017
Students at Copenhagen University are being offered classes on Beyoncé.

Already 75 students at the university - which dates back more than 530 years - have signed up for the course.

The class, entitled “Beyoncé, Gender and Race” will be taught in much the same way as other cultural courses such as opera, the Local reported.

Such is the interest in the class that it has been moved to a larger lecture hall.

Erik Steinskog told the Danish broadcaster, TV2 that the work of Beyoncé Knowles was a matter of academic interest.

“We will analyse her songs and music videos. There will be a focus on gender, sexuality and race," he said.

"One of the goals is to introduce black feminist thought, which is not well known in Scandinavia. We want to explore the kind of entity feminism is,” he said.

“Beyoncé is important in understanding the world we live in. Beyoncé is one of the biggest pop artists today, which makes her important in an analysis of contemporary times,” Prof Steinskog added.

JAY-Z reveals how he and Beyoncé chose twins' names

Klaudia//August 31, 2017
We finally know what inspired JAY-Z and Beyoncé in naming their newborn twins.

The rap star told Rap Radar in a podcast released Friday the couple’s new baby girl was named after the 13th Century poet, Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi.

"Rumi is our favorite poet, so it was for our daughter," JAY-Z said, confirming what many have speculated since the twins' names were first announced in June.

But the process for their son's name, Sir, was a little more organic.

"Sir was like, man, come out the gate. He carries himself like that," JAY-Z, 47, said. "He just came out like, Sir."

The Tidal music streaming service owner also revealed to Rap Radar how his and Bey's first daughter, Blue Ivy, 5, rapped on his "4:44" album, saying she climbed up onto a stool and started stringing together a rhyme.

“She got the headphones and she climbed on the little stool, and then she just started rapping,” he said. "I was like, 'Oh, s--t.' I have (her freestyle) on my phone. Five minutes! Five minutes of her doing that."

Beyoncé pledges to help with Hurricane Harvey relief efforts

Klaudia//August 29, 2017
Beyoncé has pledged to do her part to help Hurricane Harvey victims.

The Houston native released an exclusive statement Monday afternoon to the Chronicle regarding the devastating effects still being felt throughout the city.

"My heart goes out to my hometown, Houston, and I remain in constant prayer for those affected and for the rescuers who have been so brave and determined to do so much to help," she said.

"I am working closely with my team at BeyGOOD as well as my pastor (Rudy Rasmus at St. John's in downtown Houston) to implement a plan to help as many as we can."

BeyGOOD, launched in 2013 during the Mrs. Carter World Tour, is a philanthropic effort that partners with global charity organizations to get people employed and provide clothing, counseling, housing, food and medical assistance.

Beyoncé posted a black and white photo on Instagram of herself holding the Texas flag with the caption, "Texas you are in my prayers." In less than a day it's received more than 1 million likes.

Beyoncé wrote the foreword to Prince: A Private View

Klaudia//August 17, 2017
We’d be excited enough by Prince: A Private View, a new book of photographs of the late pop legend by Afshin Shahidi, just because of the gorgeous images inside. But the foreword to the book is practically an event in itself. It’s written by one Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, and EW can exclusively share this peek at her words: “Truth be told, the word ‘icon’ only scratches the surface of what Prince was and what he remains to me.”

Shahidi was Prince’s friend for 20 years and photographer for 10, and Prince: A Private View — due out Oct. 17 — features photos and captions that reflect that relationship. The images range from intimate to candid to staged, and many of them have never been seen before. Shahidi was also the only photographer to shoot Prince’s 3121 private parties in Los Angeles.

Beyonce Interested in Buying Stake in Houston Rockets

Klaudia//August 2, 2017
Pop superstar Beyonce, a Houston native, is mulling an investment in the National Basketball Association’s Rockets, according to people familiar with the matter.

Rockets owner Les Alexander, a former bond trader, said last month he was selling the team amid a surge in franchise values across sports. The club’s popularity in China may push the sale price past the record $2 billion Steve Ballmer paid for the Los Angeles Clippers three years ago.

Alexander paid $85 million for the Rockets in 1993.

It’s common for celebrities to make small investments in sports teams. Beyonce’s husband, Jay-Z, for instance, was born in Brooklyn and once held a less than 1 percent stake in basketball’s Nets. He sold his share of the team after starting Roc Nation, which represents athletes.

There are plenty of other examples: Pop star Justin Timberlake, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, owns a piece of basketball’s Grizzlies; tennis players Venus and Serena Williams, as well as Jennifer Lopez, are investors in football’s Miami Dolphins; and actor Will Ferrell has a stake in Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Football Club.

The Rockets declined to comment. Beyonce’s publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment. The entertainer’s representatives at Sony Music Entertainment declined to comment. A spokeswoman for her husband, Jay-Z, also didn’t immediately respond.
