Beyonce dedicates Survivor to Chelsea

Klaudia//November 2, 2013
Beyonce has reunited with her "Aussie angel". The American pop singer took time out from her tour to meet terminally ill cancer patient Chelsea James in Sydney.

The pair are old friends. Beyonce sang for Chelsea when she last played shows here in 2009. Chelsea, 15, is in palliative care in Newcastle.

The reunion was organised by Camp Quality and took place backstage at Allphones Arena on Thursday night.

"I was so excited to meet Beyonce again," Chelsea said. "Last time Beyonce sang to me on stage. This time ... I actually got to meet her backstage and talk to her and laugh with her, which was so cool. I'll never forget this."

"My beautiful angel!," Beyonce wrote in a message to Chelsea after their reunion. "You have no idea how happy you made me seeing you. I will see you the next time I'm in Australia."

In 2009, Beyonce singled out Chelsea, then 11, in the audience and sang her hit Halo, changing the words to, "Chelsea I can see your halo - I pray you won't fade away." The YouTube footage went viral and was picked up by talkshow host Ellen DeGeneres. At the time, Chelsea was given a one per cent chance of survival as she battled a rare form of cancer, a primitive neuroectodermal tumour. The teen recently relapsed for the 14th time.

During Thursday's concert, the singer dedicated her performance of Survivor to Chelsea. "This was such an emotional reunion between Chelsea and Beyonce," Donna James, Chelsea's mother, said.

Leukaemia survivor Bronte Horswood, 12, and nine-year-old cancer sufferer Andrea Al Zened also got to meet Beyonce.
