Barbara Jordan

Barbara Jordan was a force to be reckoned with in American politics, serving in the Texas House of Representatives, the Texas Senate, and the US House of Representative. She was the first black woman to ever win a senate seat in Texas. Jordan became the first black woman from a southern state to enter the U.S. House of Representatives in 1972 and was the first African-American woman to deliver the keynote address at a Democratic National Convention. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, among numerous other honors and became the first African-American woman to be buried in the Texas State Cemetery upon her death in 1996.

Madame C.J. Walker

Madame C.J. Walker was a female entrepreneur who created specialized hair products for African Americans and became the first female self-made millionaire in America. She cumulated her fortune through hard work, innovative ideas, and a fierce dedication to her craft and her people. By the time of her passing in 1919, Walker had built one of the largest African American owned manufacturing companies in the world with an international network of over 15,000 Madame Walker agents, beauty schools in three states, and a 32 room mansion at Irvington-on-the-Hudson, New York.

Guion Bluford

Boasting a resume filled with military flight experience and advanced degrees in aerospace engineering, Guion Bluford became the first African-American astronaut to reach space in 1983 on the Space Shuttle Challenger. He was a Colonel in the Air Force and participated in four shuttle flights between 1983 and 199. He was inducted into the International Space Hall of Fame in 1997, and inducted into the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2010.
