Behind the Scenes of Beyonce's BET Awards Performance

Klaudia//June 30, 2016

It’s after 11 p.m. on a Saturday night and Beyoncé has forgone a slew of other places to be here.

Fresh off a Hawaiian vacation with her family, her sister’s 30th birthday celebration and the 41-date U.S. leg of her Formation World Tour — complete with a 36-song set — it would be understandable if she were asleep. But she wasn’t. Instead, she opted for the dark, empty confines of an empty arena. Drenched in water and taking refuge beneath a towel while seated at a three-monitor setup next to Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé is still working. With less that 24 hours to spare before her next gig, she is correcting camera shots, repeatedly running through physically taxing choreography and belting out “Freedom” over and over, each time with the same fervor as the last rendition. In a covert operation manned by more than 100 people, the striking part of her impromptu night shift is that millions of people don’t know it’s taking place. There’s no photo op. No interview. No audience. Propped up in a an all-white bodysuit adorned with sequins and tassels, the singer is a far cry away from rest and relaxation, as a 10-hour flight to Sunderland, North England looms.

The locale of choice for the biggest star in the world this evening is the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, rehearsing for the 2016 BET Awards.

BET's Debra Lee on Keeping Beyonce's Secret

Klaudia//June 28, 2016
The challenges behind keeping Beyoncé’s BET Awards performance a secret:

She committed several weeks ago. We had four tons of water that we had to get on the stage and then clean up after her performance. We were worried about electricity and other things that could go wrong. But we wanted her to have the performance she wanted. She hadn’t been to the awards in a few years. After hearing her new music, I thought it was important for her to be there. She has a show in England tomorrow night, so it was great of her to agree to stay because it wasn’t the perfect timing. I saw the rehearsal the night before the show and that’s when I first learned that Kendrick Lamar was part of it. She does the water dance in her concert but with all women. But Beyoncé thought it was important to have men and women of color come together. She wanted this to be a performance she’d never done before. She wanted it to be epic, and it was.

We threatened people within an inch of their lives to keep the secret. Beyoncé wants to do it her way; I respect her for that. And she didn’t want people to know she was going to be on the show. So we told very few people on the team. I was a nervous wreck until the day of the show because I was like, "If this leaks out, this may not happen." All of her rehearsals were closed. You had to have special permission to get in. Beyoncé would rehearse late at night for hours. She and the dancers would get wet, look at the tape and then get wet again. The night I went, all the dancers were onstage in bathrobes waiting to rehearse again. At one point they started heating the water to make Beyoncé and the dancers more comfortable.

Chloe x Halle Opening for European Leg of Formation Tour

Klaudia//June 27, 2016
Chloe and Halle Bailey have exciting news for their fans -- the singing duo known as Chloe x Halle will be opening for Beyoncé on the European leg of her Formation world tour!

The teens couldn't wait to share the news with ET's Kevin Frazier Sunday night on the silver carpet at the BET Awards.

"We'll be opening up for Beyoncé on the Formation tour in Europe! We're so excited," 17-year-old Chloe gushed. "We've been working so hard and we can't wait to go on tour with her."

Chloe and her sister Halle, 16, were signed to Beyonce’s Parkwood Entertainment record label after their cover of her song, "Pretty Hurts," went viral in 2013. The sisters are Beyonce protégés and appeared alongside Amandla Stenberg and Zendaya in the pop superstar's Lemonade film.

So what is it like working with Queen Bey herself?

"She is just such an amazing person inside and out. Being around her is just amazing because she's just such a teacher to us, especially as young girls who are coming up in this music industry," Halle said.

"She's the top artist in the game. She works so hard and puts 2,000 percent into everything she does. That's very inspiring to us," she added.

'Formation' Wins Grand Prix at Cannes Lions Awards

Klaudia//June 25, 2016
Beyonce can now add the Cannes Lions’ most prestigious honor to her awards shelf: her music video for “Formation,” surprise-released in February, took home one of two Grand Prix Lion Awards at the inaugural Cannes Lions Entertainment for Music, awarded Friday night (June 24.)

“Formation” was the top winner in the highly competitive Excellence In Music Video category, which shortlisted 13 music videos on Thursday and awarded eight with prizes on Friday. Other honorees included Silver Lion winners “Voodoo In My Blood,” by Massive Attack feat. Young Fathers; “Luminous Freedom” by New Build and “Blackstar” by David Bowie; as well as Bronze Lion winners “Hello” by Adele; “Runnin” by Naughty Boy featuring Beyonce & Arrow Benjamin and “Wide Open” by the Chemical Brothers featuring Beck.

Beyonce isn’t the only member of the Carter family with a Cannes Lions Grand Prix under their belt: in 2011, Jay Z took home two -- from the Integrated and Outdoor Lions -- for Droga5 and Bing’s “Decoded” campaign, which hid all 320 pages of Jay Z’s autobiography in 13 cities across the globe.

Though “Formation” doesn’t represent the typical Grand Prix-winning campaign in that no corporate brand was attached, Grey Group’s evp-director of music Josh Rabinowitz, jury president of Lions Entertainment for Music, argued that the video’s re-positioning of Beyonce’s personal brand was just as powerful. “ the biggest artist on the planet taking serious risks,” Rabinowitz said in a press conference earlier in the day, announcing the winners. “This is a mainstream pop artist pushing the limits on the way we perceive things of race in culture, and the perception of women in culture.”

5 Years Of "4": Creatives Reflect On Their Time With Beyonce

Klaudia//June 25, 2016
Beyonce’s 4, her straightforwardly-titled fourth studio album, was unleashed for the world to hear on June 24, 2011. As her first solo album independent from her former manager and father Matthew, Beyonce experimented with more intimate themes and eclectic sound stylings, setting the album apart from her first three LP’s. 4 seemingly serves as the catalyst for her musical journey of deeper, more personal themes displayed in her self-titled fifth album and her recent sixth opus, Lemonade.

However, we know a ship needs a strong crew behind it to keep it afloat. Beyonce meticulously chooses to work with a select team of creatives who she believes will give her work that certain je ne sais quoi, and develops professional relationships with those who focus on the art as a whole. We thought it would be interesting to get a behind-the-scenes look at the album from some of the people who were immersed in its development. Read on to see what it was like to work with Bey both in the booth and in the dance studio from colleagues who aided in the sonic and visual success of this project.

Symbolyc One (S1) was a co-producer on “Best Thing I Never Had.” A Very GOOD Beats signee, S1 has produced for Kanye West (“Power”), Eminem (“Bad Guy” from the Marshall Mathers LP 2”) and The Throne (“Murder To Excellence”).

VIBE: Before you worked on 4, have you ever worked with Beyonce before? And if not, how did she initially get a hold of you?
S1:
So, this was actually my first time working with Beyonce, on the 4 album. The way I began a working relationship with her was that I worked with Kanye on the My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album, and I had the honor of going to London and Australia to work with him and Jay Z on Watch The Throne. So, while we working on the Watch The Throne album, Beyonce was out there of course, so that’s when I really started to build a relationship with her. On our second trip—we went to London first—so on our second trip to Australia, we really started to build a working relationship. We were in this mansion together that they built that had these three studios, and they built a studio for Beyonce on the third floor. She invited me up to her floor to listen to some songs that she was working on for 4, so I went up, listened to some songs and gave my critique on some of them.
