Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival - Weekend 2

Klaudia//April 22, 2018
Beyoncé returned to Coachella last night for the second weekend—and her second performance as headliner. The performance wasn't streamed this time, and despite an initial announcement, SiriusXM radio's live stream didn't include her set.

Visually the show was refreshed, with Beyoncé and her 100 dancers and band members washed in shades of magenta and virtually every ensemble the singer wore was swapped out for a new look.

The set-list, however, remained untouched and she was again joined by husband Jay-Z, former Destiny's Child bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams as well as her sister Solange Knowles. There was an extra surprise, as the singer was also joined by J. Balvin for a quick run of "Mi Gente."

Beyoncé's Coachella merchandise collection was expanded with two new items, which are now available on the Coachella Pop-Up Store website.

Beyonce's Second Coachella Weekend Performance Won't Be Streamed

Klaudia//April 19, 2018
Confirmed: Beychella’s second weekend won’t feature the exact same iconic set we saw before. Backup dancer Jo’Artis Mijo Ratti told Variety that the team is “switching up a couple things, so there could still be a wow factor.” The bad news: Beyoncé’s second Coachella set this weekend won’t stream on YouTube, nor are there plans to re-air it. However, members of the Beyhive can live-stream the audio for Weekend 2 on SiriusXM’s Coachella Radio.

Beyoncé & Destiny's Child Sales Soar After Coachella

Klaudia//April 18, 2018
Not only did Beyoncé's Coachella 2018 performance make history and shake pop culture, it also sold a ton of music. In particular, that snazzy Destiny's Child reunion where Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams harmonized with Bey to sing "Soldier," "Lose My Breath" and "Say My Name," ushered in a major bump in digital sales.

According to Nielsen, after the performance ended, digital song sales for Destiny's Child hits soared some 767% on Sunday, April 15, not even 24 hours after the group collectively wowed the crowd. The trio is marking the 20th anniversary of the chart-topping girl's group, and the sudden uptick in downloads means the ladies have not lost relevancy even though they don't often perform live together. As for Bey, though it's hard to fathom that there are some people out there who don't already own her music, she still managed to sell yet more of it. Digital song sales for Beyoncé's catalog saw a 228% increase compared to a baseline established prior to Coachella.

Beyonce, with 7,000 units sold, overall moved more units because her baseline is larger than that of Destiny's Child, which moved around 1,200 units, according to Nielsen.

Of all that music, the song "Hold Up" was the top-selling track for Beyoncé with a sales spike of 287%.

The singer's most recent album, Lemonade, hit the number 1 spot on the overall worldwide iTunes chart, as well as national charts in Brazil, Denmark and Norway. In the United States, it ascended to the fifth position.

Beyonce's Coachella Performance Broke YouTube Viewing Record

Klaudia//April 18, 2018
As arguably one of the best live shows of recent times, Beyoncé's Coachella performance broke a major viewing record on YouTube during its live stream on Saturday, April 14. According to a press release, this year's Coachella was reportedly the festival's biggest to date, bringing over 41 million live views from fans in 232 countries over the weekend. Beyoncé's Saturday stage show alone garnered 458K simultaneous viewers around the world, making her awe-inspiring presentation the most viewed Coachella performance of all time, as well as the most viewed live music festival ever on YouTube.

Amidst the performance, Beyoncé became the first black woman to ever headline Coachella in its nearly 20-year history, and she absolutely made it a point to use the platform to showcase all of the beauty of her roots throughout the entire history-making night. Making mention of the monumental moment, Beyoncé spoke to the audience, saying, “Thank you Coachella for allowing me to be the first black woman to headline."

Beyoncé Supports Figure Skating in Harlem

Klaudia//April 18, 2018
Beyoncé has amped up the visibility of her philanthropic work after her historic Coachella performance. On Monday, the singer revealed that she would be donating $100,000 of scholarship funds to HBCUs. The four schools included Xavier University, Wilberforce University, Bethune-Cookman University and Tuskegee University.

Bey is now using her activewear brand IVY PARK to help to empower young female figure skaters through the organization Figure Skating in Harlem. Through the collaboration, the young girls were gifted with product from the line to help encourage them to continue on in their sport.

FSHarlem was started by Sharon Cohen in 1997 as a means to give girls in the New York City community a space to participate. Figure skating can often times be exclusive to people of a certain class and demographics. Cohen believed that the discipline required to partake in figure skating would help to foster the tools needed to succeed in school and through college.

As a part of the campaign, the FSHarlem girls modeled the Spring line in a short film. Cohen says they were “in shock” when she revealed that they would be working for the pop star.

Beyonce's Mom 'Stands Corrected' After Questioning Bey's Coachella Vision

Klaudia//April 17, 2018
Beyoncé's mom, Tina Knowles Lawson, knew her daughter would perform a headlining set for the ages at Coachella, but she was unsure as to how the performance would be received.

Now, she's admitting that she "stands corrected," as a revealing conversation with the pop star showed her how important it was for her to stick to her vision.

Lawson shared part of an intimate conversation between her and Beyoncé about the historic Coachella set, which drew inspiration from the marching bands, step teams and dance crews of HBCU, or Historically Black Colleges and Universities. "I told Beyoncé that i was afraid that the predominately white audience at Coachella would be confused by all of the black culture and Black college culture because it was something that they might not get," she writes.

"Her brave response to me made me feel a bit selfish and ashamed. She said 'I have worked very hard to get to the point where I have a true voice and at this point in my life and my career I have a responsibility to do whats best for the world and not what is most popular.'"

She went on to point out that Bey's mission was to unite the audience at Coachella and encourage understanding, even if they weren't familiar with HBCU: "She said that her hope is that after the show young people would research this culture and see how cool it is, and young people black and white would listen to 'LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING' and see how amazing the words are for us all and bridge the gap."

"She also hopes that it will encourage young kids to enroll in our amazing Historically Black Colleges and Universities," Lawson continued. "I stand corrected ❤️"

Beyoncé Announces Homecoming Scholars Award Program

Klaudia//April 16, 2018
Today, Beyoncé, through her BeyGOOD initiative, announces the four schools to receive the newly established Homecoming Scholars Award Program for the 2018-2019 academic year. The Universities, Xavier, Wilberforce, Tuskegee and Bethune-Cookman, are all Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). HBCUs are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the intention of primarily serving the African-American community.

On Saturday, April 14, Beyoncé made history at the 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival by becoming the first Black woman to headline in the festival's 19-year run.

The jubilant set, housed on a pyramid stage with 150-plus cast members, dutifully in-sync, was the first time the icon returned to her home, the stage, in over one year.

The show, with its homage to excellence in education, was a celebration of the homecoming weekend experience, the highest display of college pride. The energy-filled production put the spotlight on art and culture, mixing the ancient and the modern, which resonated masterfully through the marching band, performance art, choir and dance. It was the impetus to mark her second scholarship program.

Olivier Rousteing on Dressing Beyoncé in Balmain for Coachella 2018

Klaudia//April 15, 2018
It all started when stylist Marni Senofonte approached Olivier Rousteing after his Fall 2018 runway show for Balmain and explained to him that she was trying to find the right designer to create custom looks for Beyoncé’s upcoming Coachella performances. “Marni told me that the shows were all about survivors and that B was looking for something in a military style,” Rousteing says. “Our silhouettes and our sort of Mad Max, futuristic take on military looks for Fall were a perfect fit.” But, of course, Queen Bey was not about to wear something that was going to be mass-produced, so Rousting went to work with Senofonte and the rest of Beyoncé’s team to create two custom Balmain stage wardrobes, one for each of her performances tonight and next Saturday night. Rousteing also dressed the 200-some dancers on stage, as well as Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, who reunited with Beyoncé for a Destiny’s Child throwback moment. Rousteing only had a few weeks to pull it all together, spending sleepless nights and long days creating the Egyptian-inspired gold-and-black cape with intricate embellishments; as well as a hologram-fabric black jacket and bodysuit; a collegiate-style embellished yellow hoodie with “BAE” written on the front; a camouflage and mesh minidress; and a top decorated with a 2018 Beyoncé crest that shows a bee, a raised fist, a panther, and an Egyptian goddess. “By the end it felt like Marni and I were in a relationship,” the designer said with a laugh. “We went to bed texting and emailing one another and woke up doing the same.”

The Lemonade singer’s stepfather, Richard Lawson, popped by the PEOPLE Now studio to talk about his new 10-episode legal drama series In Contempt alongside co-stars Erica Ash and Christian Keyes, when he revealed the couple’s plans to display a more vulnerable side on stage after working hard to strengthen their marriage following publicized issues of past infidelity.

“Well, look at what they’ve been through in the last couple of years in terms of the things that they’ve confronted and the way that they’ve put it into art,” Lawson tells PEOPLE. “This is gonna be really a culmination of their growth and their ability to really confront the hard subjects and the hard issues.”
