Unauthorized Beyoncé bio in the works

Klaudia//October 30, 2014
Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group, is pleased to announce the next book by J. Randy Taraborrelli, the New York Times bestselling author of groundbreaking biographies of Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, the Kennedys and most recently, the Hiltons. Scheduled for publication in the Fall of 2015 in hardcover, digital and audio editions, Taraborrelli will write the first comprehensive biography ever published of pop icon Beyoncé Knowles. Jamie Raab, President and Publisher of Grand Central Publishing, acquired world rights from Mitch Douglas of the Mitch Douglas Literary Agency. The book is currently untitled.

Based on exhaustive research by Taraborrelli, including exclusive interviews with the people in the superstar’s life who have been pivotal to her personal and professional development, the biography will explore all facets of Knowles’ life. Beginning with her career at the age of seven performing in pageant shows and talent contests and recording her first number one hit record at the age of 18 with her group, Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé has become one of the most successful solo artists of her generation appearing in 2014 on the cover of Time Magazine and at the #1 spot on Forbes’ annual list of the wealthiest celebrities.

"I can't think of a more intriguing subject than Beyoncé," said Taraborrelli. "In terms of research, there's no road map to follow since this is the first major biography. Therefore, we're breaking new ground with every chapter. From Destiny's Child to solo superstardom to her marriage to Jay‐Z, Beyoncé has lived a most incredible, inspiring life. I know my readers will enjoy her journey."

Jamie Raab said of the book, “Having written the definitive biographies of music icons Madonna, Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, Randy is the perfect biographer to write about the life and career of Beyoncé Knowles.”

Beyoncé, Topshop Team For Ath-leisure Brand

Klaudia//October 27, 2014
She's arguably Topshop’s most famous customer. Now Beyoncé is connecting further by partnering with the brand.

Beyoncé Knowles and London-based Topshop have formed a 50-50 joint venture company, Parkwood Topshop Athletic Ltd., to produce an athletic streetwear brand, WWD has learned. It could launch in stores and online in fall 2015 at the earliest.

The deal is expected to be unveiled by Topshop in London today.

“This not a collaboration. This is about building a brand and building a business — a separate, proper business, with separate overhead and a separate office,” Topshop owner Sir Philip Green told WWD in an interview Sunday.

Asked how the deal came about, Green recalled: “Basically, when she was in London in February we arranged to get together. We started talking generally, about doing something together. We’ve been looking at that sector for a while. It’s something we need to be in. Based on what she does, how she works out, the conversation got into that category. We started getting into proper conversation in May or June, as to how it would work. It took six or eight weeks to put a deal together. On Friday, “Beyoncé came to our office for the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle.”

Beyoncé and her husband Jay Z have been widely photographed in Paris and London over the past week or so.

“I have always loved Topshop for their fashion credentials and forward thinking,” Beyoncé said.

RoccStar Opens Up About Unused Songs For "Beyonce"

Klaudia//October 19, 2014
RoccStar is one of the hottest producers in the game right now — not to mention an aspiring artist in his own right — with placements on Chris Brown‘s X and Jennifer Lopez‘s A.K.A.. I recently interviewed the hitmaker (coming soon) about those projects and his work on Beyonce‘s game-changing visual album. He spent a week with Queen Bey and cooked up two killer tunes but they weren’t used when she veered towards a different sound.

“I was there for like 7 days with Bey,” RoccStar remembers. “ a lot of DJ Mustard type stuff, with ‘Drunk In Love’ and ‘Partition’. I’m more on the left side of things, so I don’t think I was a good fit for that project because the records I had were maybe a little too futuristic and a little too advanced.”

“I think she wanted to swing with what was happening right now,” he continues. “I respect that, I mean Beyonce is amazing. So I don’t care what decision she makes! There were two songs that were crazy, ‘Turn It On’ and ‘Legends’ but they didn’t make it on the project.” The “Confidence” rapper later played me a snippet of the former club-banger and it sounded incredible with one of Bey’s best vocals and bone-rattling beats.

Beyonce To Release 4-Disc Platinum Edition of 'Beyonce'?

Klaudia//October 16, 2014
Is Beyonce about to slay the Holiday season with a mega release? If listings for the album, on some music sites, are credible, that might just be the case.

Screen shots of a "Platinum Edition" set were captured over the weekend on sites, including iMusic, which lists the album as coming from Columbia (Records) with four discs.

No official announcement has come from Beyonce or Columbia, but the iMusic listing points to a November 24 release, which would be timely and coincide with the start of Holiday season.

In other music news, a new Beyonce track called "Donk" was registered on ASCAP. Click here to see the entry.

The Harvard Business School Report on Beyonce

Klaudia//October 11, 2014
Last month, Billboard reported that the Harvard Business School had taken a close look at the release of Beyonce's surprise, self-titled album, dropped upon an unprepared world last December. At the time of Beyonce's midnight release, Billboard covered the event in depth, talking to the people involved and getting the inside scoop. But nearly a year later, Harvard Business School has dug even deeper into what went on behind the scenes of the reveal and Billboard got an exclusive sneak peek.

Anita Elberse, professor of business administration at Harvard Business School and Stacie Smith, a former student of Professor Elberse, have co-written the final word on how Beyonce landed like a meteorite on the dinosaurs last winter with their 27-page report titled, fittingly, "Beyonce." The study -- which will be taught in Elberse’s course “Strategic Marketing in Creative Industries” in early October -- takes a bird's-eye look at the music industry's current standing and Beyonce's early career, before moving on to the juiciest bits: Beyonce's founding of her own company (Parkwood Entertainment, operated as a joint venture with Rob Stringer's Columbia Records), her role at the company (CEO, lighthouse) and the planning of her opus.

For the report, Elberse and Smith interviewed key employees at Parkwood and Columbia, as well as those at Apple and Facebook directly involved in the release of Beyonce. Here are some of the most fascinating details:

How Beyonce Holds a Meeting
“ doesn’t often sit in her office,” Lee Anne Callahan-Longo, Parkwood's general manager, told the pair. “She usually walks from one office to the other, speaking with the staff. She’ll come to my office and talk to me, or she will sit in the back and give notes on projects we are working on... She has got a really good sense of the business side, but she doesn’t like to live there always. We often laugh about how an hour into a business meeting she will get up and will start walking around. I can see it then -- that I’ve lost her, and that I have satiated the amount of business that she wants to discuss that day. I’ll usually say something like ‘Let’s stop. You are going to say "Yes," but you are not listening to me anymore.’ She knows herself, will laugh, and say ‘You are absolutely right, I am done.’ Because at the end of the day she is an artist, and her passion for art drives her.”

All-Beyonce Radio Station Replaces All-News Station in Houston

Klaudia//October 11, 2014
Beyonce's empire keeps expanding its reach: first Rutgers started a course devoted to the singer; then Harvard Business School began to study her; now, a radio station in Houston has rebranded itself as a Beyonce-only radio station.

The station's website posted a statement announcing its closure: "News92, Houston’s first FM all-news radio station aired its last broadcast Wednesday, October 8, 2014... This difficult decision is a result of sustained poor ratings performance and significant financial losses over the past three years despite the substantial financial and human resources we invested."

Radio One owns the station-formerly-known-as-News92. Yashima Azilove, who works for Radio One, discussed the station's reincarnation as Beyonce radio with local news. "In looking to make a transition, we go back to what we know," Azilove told ABC13. "We know urban radio. We're in Houston, the combination seemed like a winning one." Well, it's a win for Radio One and Beyonce at least -- 47 employees of the station were laid off.

If the new station only plays Beyonce's solo catalog, it will have five albums to choose from. Not including various bonus tracks, remixes, live versions or tracks from other artists featuring Beyonce, those records contain 63 songs, adding up to roughly 4 hours and 15 minutes of music. Of course, if the station is willing to dig into Beyonce's work with Destiny's Child, that will expand their pool of possible tunes to draw from -- Destiny's Child recorded 5 albums (if you count their Christmas album), containing 67 songs and around 4.5 hours of music.

Beyonce's last album, Beyonce, came out in December of 2013; it has sold more than 2 million copies. Her "Flawless" remix is currently No. 24 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart, making it one of only two songs in the top 25 of that chart that feature a female singer.

Beyonce Didn't Have Time to Finish Barbra Streisand Duet

Klaudia//September 19, 2014
Barbra Streisand's new album of duets only includes male singers, but it wasn't a conscious effort to exclude females.

"Everyone we asked was...busy," Streisand said. The performer almost scored one major diva: Beyonce.

"She had her people try to do a track of one of the songs from my movie, 'A Star is Born,' and it just, we didn't have the time to finish it, to get it right," she said. "We had to release the album. Maybe someday we'll do a duet because she's so great."

"Partners," released Tuesday, features Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, John Legend and Babyface, who produced the album.

Jay Z And Beyonce Could Be Releasing A Joint Album

Klaudia//September 17, 2014
We don’t want to get you too excited just yet. But yes, there are rumors floating around, which claim the dynamic duo is planning to drop a joint album.

Jay Z and Beyoncé literally just wrapped their On the Run Tour with a blowout show in Paris (Nicki Minaj knows it was ‘Flawless’) and here come the reports that they’ve been secretly working on a joint project. The next confirmed item on their schedule is the debut of their On the Run Tour special on HBO, September 20, but is it really possible that an album will also be arriving soon?

DJ Skee was the first to publicly put this out into the world, announcing on-air during his Dash radio show that he had “confirmed and talked with a couple sources,” who say the project would be released in late 2014 or early 2015.

According to E!, Karli Henriquez, Vice President of Pop Programming at Dash Radio has gone on record to say that the power couple will definitely be putting out this “huge” album.

On Jay Z’s 2013 album Magna Carta Holy Grail, he and Beyoncé teamed up for “Part II (On the Run)” and on Beyoncé’s self-titled release later that year, they gave us the monster hit “Drunk in Love.” Obviously, we’ll take some more Hov and Bey if it comes our way.

MTV News has reached out to a Jay Z rep to confirm this news, but there has been no comment as of press time.

Beyonce & Jay Z Sell Out On The Run Tour

Klaudia//September 5, 2014
Beyonce and Jay Z land atop the Billboard Hot Tours chart, having wrapped the North American leg of their On the Run tour that played stadiums in 16 markets during a six-week span in the summer. Box office grosses totaled $96 million from ticket sales reported by tour promoter Live Nation for 19 sold-out performances during the summertime trek that kicked off June 25 in Florida and wrapped Aug. 6 in California.

The co-headlining couple booked two-show engagements in three markets on the schedule: New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The New York/New Jersey metropolitan area hosted the tour on July 11 and 12 with an attendance count of 89,165 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. With ticket sales totaling $11.5 million, the New Jersey venue was the top-grossing stadium during the tour's U.S. and Canadian run. Los Angeles-area fans saw the tour at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena with performances on Aug. 2 and 3. Jay Z and Beyoncé performed for 96,994 fans at the historic Southern California football venue, grossing $10.9 million. The final stadium during the summer run was AT&T Park, home of Major League Baseball's San Francisco Giants. The Bay Area generated $8.8 million in ticket sales from 73,020 seats for sellouts on Aug. 5 and 6. Jay and Bey will cross the pond for the tour's final engagement, a two-night stand in Paris on Sept. 12 and 13. The two concerts will occur at Stade de France and will be taped by HBO for broadcast on Sept. 20.

Jonas Akerlund to Film "On The Run" HBO Special

Klaudia//August 29, 2014
The most talked about event of the summer turns into the most talked about music program of the year.

The “On The Run” tour with Beyonce and Jay Z makes its debut on HBO on September 20th for an event unlike anything you’ve ever seen. 19 stops and 40 songs will be presented for your viewing pleasure, as Jonas Åkerlund films the Paris’ Stade de France shows on September 12 and 13.

When tasked with trying to find the right person to capture two of the world’s top musicians on the tour of a lifetime, Jonas Åkerlund was the natural choice. After all, Jonas is Madonna’s go-to for concert documentaries, and filmed the lauded “Live Kisses” for Paul McCartney. Take that and add some Beyonce and Jay Z, and there’s bound to be magic.

The hits, the wardrobe changes, the new arrangements, and the power that is the world’s top Mr. and Mrs. of music, all brought to your screen. Don’t miss out; set your DVRs for September 20 on HBO.

Beyoncé Leads Post-VMA Sales Gains

Klaudia//August 29, 2014
As the post-MTV VMA numbers show, performing on a big award show is not just fun and exciting, it usually means big bucks for artists. Every single one of the artists that took to the stage saw their songs and albums work their way up the iTunes charts immediately following the show, some with numbers so high it’s hard to believe there was that much more room to grow.

It goes without question that Beyoncé stole the show, as she typically does. The singer performed a medley of songs from her self-titled album that she dropped without advance warning this past December. Once she finished, husband Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy (who had possibly the second biggest moment of the show when she adorably congratulated her mother) presented her with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, the highest honor the VMA can bestow.

Having not only the most screen time but perhaps the best performance, Beyoncé saw some of the biggest gains in sales after the show. Her Beyoncé album rose from #40 to #7 on iTunes, increasing in sales by more than 1,400%. It is worth noting that the album was released in December, where it immediately went to number one, and has continued to sell ever since, so rising in sales over 1,000% is a feat not to be underestimated.

On top of that, every song she performed—if only for one verse or for less than a minute—also saw impressive gains. In order of how much each track grew in sales, here are her tracks: “XO” (up 1,648%), “Flawless” (up 1,237%), “Rocket” (up 584%), “Partition” (up 390%), “Pretty Hurts” (up 332%), and “Drunk In Love” (up 324%).
