An Oral History of Beyoncé in Austin Powers: Goldmember

Klaudia//July 17, 2022
Beyoncé has given the world innumerable gifts: the lyric “tell MCI to cut the phone poles,” the Bob Fosse–inspired “Single Ladies” dance, the infamous Met Gala elevator drama, decadent pregnancy announcements, this GIF, Coachella. Which Beyoncé souvenir am I most grateful for? I choose what now feels like an anomaly in her rarefied, holier-than-holy pop career: Foxxy Cleopatra, a.k.a. “a whole lotta woman.”

Austin Powers in Goldmember, the third installment in a franchise that launched to modest success and ballooned to an abiding cultural phenomenon, turns 20 this summer. Destiny’s Child would release one final album in 2004, but Goldmember — the seventh-highest-grossing movie of 2002 — marks Beyoncé’s transition from girl-group captain to singular superstar. It’s when Beyoncé Knowles became simply Beyoncé, even if it feels nothing like the Beyoncé we know today. With the movie came her first solo single (the underrated funk jam “Work It Out“) and a bridge to the image-defining smash “Crazy in Love,” generally considered her true breakthrough.

At the time, Beyoncé was anxious to prove herself as an actress. (Crossover fame remained very important in the early 2000s. Just ask Mariah Carey.) Her only credit was Carmen: A Hip Hopera, MTV’s contemporary spin on the classic French opera. That’s where Goldmember producer John Lyons got the idea to enlist her to play Foxxy, a stylish FBI agent who used to shag Austin (Mike Myers) and moonlights as a nightclub singer at Studio 69. As Beyoncé recounted in 2002, she auditioned twice. “I read with Mike and just tried to be the straight guy. When I left, I was convinced I wasn’t going to get it,” she told Newsweek. For her callback, she “went back in wearing a Pam Grier–like catsuit, an Afro wig, and had memorized every blaxploitation film ever made.” Her fate was sealed.

"Renaissance" Album Cover

Klaudia//June 30, 2022
Beyonce shared the album cover for "Renaissance". She wrote:

"Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world. It allowed me to feel free and adventurous in a time when little else was moving. My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment. A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom. It was a beautiful journey of exploration. I hope you find joy in this music. I hope it inspires you to release the wiggle. Ha! And to feel as unique, strong, and sexy as you are."

UPDATE: The album is now available for pre-order on Shop Beyonce as digital download and CD.

Beyoncé's British Vogue Cover: Beyoncé Is Poised For Her Next Evolution

Klaudia//June 16, 2022
A Sunday evening in Los Angeles; a drive into a discreet set of gates for a candid dinner with Beyoncé.

Two days before I find myself here, at Beyoncé’s home, we had convened in West Hollywood with photographer Rafael Pavarotti to make a fashion story. New music is coming – a thrilling abundance of it, but let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. In what might be her most ambitious musical project to date, the culture-shifting, Grammy-dominating Queen Bee of all she surveys has trained her considerable artillery on America’s musical soundscape of the late 20th century. Do I need to add there is also a little mystery at play?

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, a writer of excellent and lengthy texts, had taken to messaging me as we brainstormed the direction of her Vogue shoot together. A fashion fantasia spun from the tropes of club life during the last century’s final quarter. Mirror balls, light boxes, headdresses? Of course. A horse on the dance floor? Certainly. A motorcycle for her to adorn in Junya Watanabe leathers and Harris Reed & Roker boots? Why not. B wanted to play with fashion like never before, and as we swapped references (from the 1990s garage scene to ’80s excess), talked hair and beauty, and got to know her team, a vision of glittering retro-futurism began to take shape.

Beyoncé's Latest Ivy Park Drop Reimagines the Stan Smith

Klaudia//May 18, 2022
Beyoncé and Stan Smith — a match made in heaven? The Beyhive will undoubtedly vote an unequivocal yes.

On Friday, the entertainer, through her Ivy Park collection, will announce that her latest partnership with Adidas will be for the Super Sleek, a new sneaker silhouette from the ongoing Adidas x Ivy Park partnership. The shoe will be available beginning May 27.

Called We Stan Summer, the shoe is a modern take on the classic Stan Smith, reimagining several references from the Adidas collection, including the Samba, as evidenced by its football-inspired tongue. It’s made from canvas and leather with green piping and a transparent gum-colored platform sole and features a three-strap closure and a T-shaped toe box.

To complement the shoe, the partners are offering three options of crew socks: two with Adidas’ signature trio of stripes and the Ivy Park branding, while the third features the Ivy Park monogram.

The sneakers will retail for $120 and the three-pack of socks are priced at $35. Both will be available on May 27 online and in select stores globally.
