Michelle on Recruiting Beyonce & Kelly For 'Say Yes'

Klaudia//June 4, 2014
Michelle Williams sent longtime fans into a tizzy on Monday with the debut of her new single, "Say Yes" but diehards had already heard the track a few weeks earlier when an unofficial version leaked. Blame former Destiny's Child groupmates Beyonce Knowles and Kelly Rowland, who, by virtue of appearing in the song's video, all but ensured that curiosity would kill the the secret.

"We heard all this commotion going on while we were filming," Williams tells The Hollywood Reporter of the late-May shoot. "We filmed at somebody's house and they probably got excited and called their cousins and friends and, next thing you know, the whole town was on one street. ... I woke up to the news of the song being leaked and I just hate when that happens because it was an unmastered version. At the same time, I was overwhelmed by the support. I know things happen for a reason. I don't want anyone to think I'm pissed. I'm not."

Helmed by versatile producer Harmony Samuels (Ariana Grande, Maroon 5, Chris Brown, Jennifer Hudson) "Say Yes" is an ode to his Nigerian roots. Says Williams of its origin: "It is a song that came from Africa more than a hundred years ago. I don't think anyone knows who wrote it or who started singing that chorus. When the song leaked last week, so many people from Africa and Nigeria were trying to let me know where it came from."

As for how her gal pals got involved in facilitating an unofficial Destiny's Child reunion? Rowland and Knowles fell in love with Williams' version of the song. "They received an advance copy of the album and called saying, 'We love 'When Jesus Says Yes'… there has to be a Destiny's Child mix of the song,'" Williams recalls. "Kelly did it and Beyonce got right in the studio and did her part. I kept it a secret because I didn't want anyone to know until it was time."

Being back on set with her two best friends, she adds, was amazing. "It was so much fun," says Williams. "It was like we were little kids again. I have their back and they have mine. They have showed themselves to be loyal to me time after time. They have proven they are my sisters time and time again."

"Say Yes" is the first song released from Williams's forthcoming fourth album Journey To Freedom, due out in September.

The Woman on Top of the World
A few years ago, Beyoncé Knowles was like any other record-breaking pop star in an already crowded field. Then something changed.

If you’ve ever seen Beyoncé Knowles astride a concert stage or a red carpet, you know she is a woman with a flair for dramatic entrances. But no previous coup de théâtre prepared the world for the arrival of the singer’s fifth full-length solo record, “Beyoncé,” the “visual album” that airdropped onto iTunes at midnight on Dec. 13, 2013. For months, the music press had seethed with speculation about Beyoncé’s delayed record release, with rumors of disastrous studio sessions and dozens of scrapped songs. “There is utter disarray in Beyoncé’s camp,” the website MediaTakeOut.com hissed. It was an unheard-of turn of events for Beyoncé, whose career had been a testament to, as it were, array: a regal, orderly parade from hit to hit, milestone to milestone, strength to strength.

How Beyoncé and Jay Z's Star-Studded Trailer Got Made

Klaudia//May 28, 2014
If fans were excited for Beyoncé and Jay Z to hit the road together on this summer’s On The Run Tour, it’s safe to say things ramped up even more when the power couple released a completely unexpected, star-studded faux movie trailer earlier this month. Featuring a gun-wielding Beyoncé, a gangster Jay, and cameos from A-list Hollywood royalty including Sean Penn, Jake Gyllenhaal, Blake Lively, and Don Cheadle, the trailer—technically a music video for Jay’s "Part II (On the Run)"—was a gloriously epic shock to the system.

But how did it all come together? And even though the words “Coming Never” flash on the screen at the video’s end, will we ever see this become an actual feature-length film? We turned to the film’s director, former Beyoncé creative director and Grammy-winning music video bigwig, Melina Matsoukas, for those answers and more. The filmmaker, who has worked with everyone from Rihanna to Solange and Lady Gaga, revealed to ELLE.com how Beyoncé and Jay transformed into action stars, which actor dropped everything for their cameo, and why she considers the Carters family.

This 'Run' video was straight-up epic. Take me through the process of how it came to life.

Obviously I’ve worked with Beyoncé quite a bit; I know Jay through the years. We’ve been trying to work together for a couple of his albums and it just never came to fruition. I’d been dying to work with him and I love working with her, so it just felt like the perfect combination. With this song, it’s actually a music video—I know everyone’s calling it a trailer, which I guess it is as well. But it’s a music video for his song “Part II (On The Run).” I feel like in Jay’s career he doesn’t want to just do a normal music video. So we were trying to come up with a way to visualize the song that wasn’t something that we’ve seen before. So I came up with this whole movie trailer idea and it just kind of progressed from there. We were talking about trying to hide the fact that it was a music video, and the idea was to release this trailer for this blockbuster that you’ll never see.

Adding to the superstar diva shoutouts, Beyonce passes Janet Jackson, who's notched 19 No. 1s.
